The fate of shear-oscillated amorphous solids

Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of shear-oscillated amorphous materials is studied using a coarse-grained model. It is found that the steady-state behavior is determined by the initial preparation and the oscillation amplitude. The transient regime characterizing the growth and motion of the shear band is also investigated.

Yielding transition of a two dimensional glass former under athermal cyclic shear deformation

Himangsu Bhaumik et al.

Summary: We numerically study the yielding transition of a two-dimensional model glass under athermal quasi-static cyclic shear deformation and investigate the effect of the degree of annealing on the yielding behavior. We find two distinct annealing regimes separated by a threshold energy. Poorly annealed glasses evolve towards the threshold energy as the strain amplitude increases, while well annealed glasses with initial energies below the threshold energy exhibit stable behavior until yielding. The discontinuities in energy and stress at yielding increase with the degree of annealing, consistent with recent findings in three dimensions.

Avalanches, Clusters, and Structural Change in Cyclically Sheared Silica Glass

Himangsu Bhaumik et al.

Summary: In this study, we computationally investigate plastic rearrangements and structural change in the prototypical strong glass, silica. We find that during the yielding transition in silica, anomalous structural change and densification occur, accompanied by a suppression of tetrahedral order.

Mean-Field Theory of Yielding under Oscillatory Shear

Jack T. Parley et al.

Summary: This paper studies a mean field elastoplastic model with a disordered landscape of local yield barriers to investigate the behavior of athermal amorphous solids under oscillatory shear. The model shows a genuine dynamical transition from an elastic to a yielded state, and qualitatively reproduces the dependence on the initial degree of annealing found in particle simulations. A nontrivial, nonmonotonic approach to the yielded state is observed for initial conditions below the analytically derived threshold energy. The timescale diverges as one approaches the yielding point from above, which is identified as the fatigue limit. The connections to brittle yielding under uniform shear are also discussed.

Emergence of a random field at the yielding transition of a mean-field elasto-plastic model

Saverio Rossi et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the mean-field limit of an elasto-plastic model used to describe the yielding transition of athermally and quasi-statically sheared amorphous solids. Our focus was on sample-to-sample fluctuations, which were characterized analytically, and we drew parallels with the athermally driven random-field Ising model. We emphasized that the random field at the yielding transition is an emerging disorder and explored the various factors influencing its strength.

The fate of shear-oscillated amorphous solids

Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of shear-oscillated amorphous materials was studied using a coarse-grained model. Samples prepared at different degrees of annealing showed different steady-states under various fixed amplitudes of oscillation. Poorly annealed materials displayed shear-annealing under small oscillations, while ultra-stabilized materials were found to be insensitive to them.

The role of annealing in determining the yielding behavior of glasses under cyclic shear deformation

Himangsu Bhaumik et al.

Summary: Recent computer simulations have shown that yielding behavior in amorphous solids is characterized by a discontinuous transition, with the degree of annealing playing a crucial role. Highly annealed glasses exhibit discontinuous stress changes at yielding, while poorly annealed glasses show gradual yielding. Additionally, in cyclic shear simulations, poorly annealed glasses tend to become better annealed as they approach the yielding point, with a modest discontinuous change at yielding.

Topology of the energy landscape of sheared amorphous solids and the irreversibility transition

Ido Regev et al.

Summary: Recent experiments and simulations have revealed that the plastic deformation of amorphous solids under an oscillatory drive can exhibit surprising reversible dynamics for small strain amplitudes. The system can reach limit cycles where plastic events repeat indefinitely, although reaching reversible limit cycles may require a large number of driving cycles. The study shows that reversible plastic events are abundant and can be part of a reversible deformation path, while the transition graph can be decomposed into clusters connected by reversible transitions. The size of these clusters follows a power-law distribution, with regions of reversibility surrounded by regions of irreversibility that proliferate at higher strains.

Insights from the quantitative calibration of an elasto-plasticmodel from a Lennard-Jones atomic glass

David Fernandez Castellanos et al.

Summary: The study compared the macroscopic and local plastic behavior of a model amorphous solid based on two different numerical descriptions, proposing a mesoscale elasto-plastic model with anisotropy of the yield surface. By analyzing mechanical observables at the same length scales, it was found that the elasto-plastic model can quantitatively recover the macroscopic mechanical response, but calibration at the local scale only showed qualitative agreement under optimized parameters and sufficient probing length scales. Certain properties naturally emerged from the elasto-plastic model, such as accurate correlations between stress fluctuations and local yield stresses.
