Characterization of Acetonitrile Isotopologues as Vibrational Probes of Electrolytes

Bogdan Dereka et al.

Summary: Acetonitrile is a solvent candidate for novel electrolyte formulations in metal-ion batteries and supercapacitors due to its sensitivity to battery-relevant cations in infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Different species like metal-coordinated acetonitrile, water-separated metal-acetonitrile pair, and free solvent can be differentiated based on their distinct vibrational signatures. Isotope labeling the solvent is necessary to study energy transfer processes and structural interconversions in these electrolytes, and time-resolved two-dimensional (2D) IR spectroscopy can provide insights into the structural dynamics of various species in these formulations.

Exchange-Mediated Transport in Battery Electrolytes: Ultrafast or Ultraslow?

Bogdan Dereka et al.

Summary: Understanding charge transport mechanisms in batteries is crucial for designing new electrolyte formulations. This study used ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy to investigate exchange processes in Li+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, and Ba2+ electrolytes. The results showed that the observed spectral dynamics mainly originated from intermolecular energy transfer, with no solvent exchange phenomena observed.

Complex Formation and Dissociation Dynamics on Amorphous Silica Surfaces

Steven A. Yamada et al.

Summary: The dynamics of benzene complex formation and dissociation with silanols on the amorphous silica surfaces of nanoporous SiO2 were investigated using 2D IR and PSPP measurements. Two types of isolated silanols, type I and II, were identified, with different dissociation time constants and vibrational relaxation rates. The results suggest that the type I silanols are more stable and energetically favorable, while the type II silanols exhibit faster vibrational relaxation rates.
