Exploring Functional Materials by Understanding Beam-Sample Interactions

Christian Kisielowski et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural alterations of functional materials under electron irradiation using ultra-low-dose electron diffraction. The results show that the fading diffraction patterns depend on the irradiated area and beam current, and heat generation and inelastic scattering events play a role in radiation hardness. A unified model predicts the existence of a critical dose rate for any material and explains how Brillouin scattering triggers time-temperature transformations.

Nanoscale-Femtosecond Imaging of Evanescent Surface Plasmons on Silver Film by Photon-Induced Near-Field Electron Microscopy

Xuewen Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, surface plasmons on a silver film were excited using a femtosecond laser, and the subsequent transient dynamics were investigated using photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). The results showed that unlike silver nanowires and nanorods, the PINEM intensity on the silver film did not show any polarization dependence, providing a simple method for identifying the time zero in 4D ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM).

Stroboscopic ultrafast imaging using RF strip-lines in a commercial transmission electron microscope

Spencer A. Reisbick et al.

Summary: The development of ultrafast electron microscopy has overcome the spatial limitations of ultrafast spectroscopy and the temporal restrictions of traditional TEM. This study demonstrates the use of a new pulsed electron beam and RF-induced transverse deflection to achieve high spatial resolution imaging and magnetic spin induction maps. The study also includes the development of a new RF holder for improved sample transmission power loss.

Attosecond state-resolved carrier motion in quantum materials probed by soft x-ray XANES

Barbara Buades et al.

Summary: Recent advances in attosecond technology have enabled table-top x-ray spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range, combining element- and state-specificity with real-time electronic dynamics tracking. Studies on materials like Ti, SiO2, GaN, Al2O3, Ti, and TiO2 show promise in observing 3d-state dynamics and the influence of optical fields on charge carriers. The ability to observe carrier dynamics in specific bonding or anti-bonding states may lead to new opportunities in designing materials with desired properties and efficiency.

Element-specific electronic and structural dynamics using transient XUV and soft X-ray spectroscopy

Hanzhe Liu et al.

Summary: Transient extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft X-ray absorption techniques are powerful tools for measuring ultrafast carrier and structural dynamics in materials, but the interpretation of excited-state spectra is complex due to corehole-valence state coupling. The rising use of XUV spectroscopy in understanding solar energy materials, including measurements of polaron formation and charge transport in junctions, shows promise for the study of functional devices in photochemistry and photoelectrochemistry.

Access to Ultrafast Surface and Interface Carrier Dynamics Simultaneously in Space and Time

Jianfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The dynamics of charge carriers at material surfaces and interfaces are crucial for the performance of photocatalytic reactions and photovoltaic devices. A unique second-generation scanning ultrafast electron microscope (S-UEM) has been developed to provide direct and controllable information about ultrafast charge carrier dynamics and the localization of electrons and holes. Future developments should consider both theoretical and experimental perspectives.

Coherent Phonon Disruption and Lock-In during a Photoinduced Charge-Density-Wave Phase Transition

Spencer A. Reisbick et al.

Summary: The study reveals evidence of coupling between displacively excited coherent acoustic phonons (CAPs) and periodic lattice distortions (PLDs) in the charge-density-wave material 1T-TaS2. The CAPs, consisting of coupled longitudinal and transverse character, propagate at anomalously high velocities dictated by defect orientation.
