Effect of temperature and composition on density and dynamic viscosity of (lanthanide metal salts plus urea) deep eutectic solvents

Vaishali Khokhar et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are solvent media with unique properties and promising environmental benefits. This study investigates the density and dynamic viscosity of DESs composed of hydrated lanthanide salts and urea at different compositions and temperatures. The results show that density decreases with increasing urea content and temperature, and dynamic viscosity also decreases with increasing urea content. The viscosity-temperature relationship follows Vogel - Fulcher - Tammann (VFT) expression. The DESs studied have similar viscosity-temperature dependence to common imidazolium ionic liquids.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.

Summary: This study developed a method for removing toxic As3+ species from contaminated aqueous solutions using hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as a sole extracting agent. The THY-DA (1:2) DES showed advantageous physicochemical properties and high extraction efficiency for As3+, and was successfully regenerated and reused. The study provides insight into the extraction mechanism by analyzing the FTIR spectra before and after extraction.
