Recent progress in dehydrogenation catalysts for heterocyclic and homocyclic liquid organic hydrogen carriers

Yeongin Jo et al.

Summary: Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are promising for H-2 storage and transportation, with the most stringent limitation being high temperatures required for the dehydrogenation reaction. Pd-based catalysts are preferred in the conversion of heterocyclic LOHC due to preferential adsorption of heteroatoms, while Pt-based catalysts dominate in the cleavage of C-H bonds for homocyclic LOHC. Efforts are needed to inhibit the generation of byproducts and improve overall performance and stability.

Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers and alternatives for international transport of renewable hydrogen

M. Niermann et al.

Summary: Hydrogen can be transported over long distances using Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC), which involves storing hydrogen in LOHC molecules and releasing it as needed. Different hydrogen transport options have varying energy consumption and costs, with LOHC favored for long-distance transport and pipelines preferred for shorter distances. Factors such as heat supply method and specific characteristics of different LOHCs need to be considered in determining the most cost-effective transport solution.

Remarkably fast low-temperature hydrogen storage into aromatic benzyltoluenes over MgO-supported Ru nanoparticles with homolytic and heterolytic H2 adsorption

Tae Wan Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduced a highly active Ru/MgO catalyst for hydrogenation of monobenzyltoluene and dibenzyltoluene at low temperatures, exhibiting faster storage rate and superior kinetic parameters compared to other supported Ru catalysts. The better catalytic performance is attributed to the strong adsorption capability of monobenzyltoluene and hydrogen by Ru/MgO, as well as the heterolytic H-2 dissociation near the Ru-MgO interface confirmed by DFT calculations.

Partial positively charged Pt in Pt/MgAl2O4 for enhanced dehydrogenation activity

Yongxiao Tuo et al.

Summary: Platinum group metals show high potential for dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers, but the strong adsorption of dehydrogenation product has hindered catalyst performance. Strong interactions between Pt and MgAl2O4 result in partial positively charged Pt, reducing naphthalene adsorption and enhancing decalin dehydrogenation activity. This study reveals a new approach to construct highly efficient metal catalysts for LOHCs.
