Photocatalyst-free visible-light-promoted quinazolinone synthesis at room temperature utilizing aldehydes generated in situ via C=C bond cleavage

Zongbo Xie et al.

Summary: This report presents a facile tandem route for synthesizing quinazolinones at room temperature from aminobenzamides and in situ-generated aldehydes, using molecular oxygen as a clean oxidant in the absence of a photocatalyst. Visible light plays multiple roles in the reaction, initially cleaving styrene to an aldehyde, facilitating its cyclization with an o-substituted aniline, and promoting the dehydrogenation of the cyclized intermediate. The overall process is simple, environmentally benign, and economically feasible.

Chun Hong Mak et al.

Summary: Homogeneous photocatalysis has greatly contributed to green applications like energy production and environmental decontamination. However, the recovery of homogeneous photocatalysts after the reaction is challenging, making the 3Rs process critical for eco-friendliness. Heterogenization of homogeneous photocatalysts using natural polymer sources has been found effective in enhancing overall photocatalytic activity under harsh reaction conditions. The review summarizes state-of-the-art techniques for heterogenization and discusses the performance of heterogeneous photocatalysts, including selectivity and reusability.
