Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Highly Robust Iron Catalyst System for Intramolecular C(sp3)-H Amidation Leading to γ-Lactams

Jeonguk Kweon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of an iron catalyst system for intramolecular C-H amidation to synthesize gamma-lactams from dioxazolone precursors. The reaction, catalyzed by (phthalocyanine)(FeCl)-Cl-III, proceeds through a stepwise radical pathway involving hydrogen atom abstraction and radical rebound, leading to extremely high turnover numbers of up to 47,000 under mild and aerobic conditions. The high turnover numbers and air-compatibility are rationalized based on experimental and computational mechanistic studies.

Enantioselective C-H Amination Catalyzed by Nickel Iminyl Complexes Supported by Anionic Bisoxazoline (BOX) Ligands

Yuyang Dong et al.

Summary: The chiral trityl-substituted bisoxazoline ligand was prepared as an analog to the previously reported nickel dipyrrin system for ring-closing amination catalysis. The ligand-metal complex exhibited enantioselective intramolecular C-H bond amination with decent yield and moderate enantioselectivity. Kinetic and isotopic studies suggested that the enantioselectivity is determined by both H-atom abstraction and radical capture steps in the reaction mechanism.

Catalytic Intermolecular C(sp3)-H Amination: Selective Functionalization of Tertiary C-H Bonds vs Activated Benzylic C-H Bonds

Erwan Brunard et al.

Summary: This study reports a catalytic intermolecular amination of nonactivated tertiary C(sp(3))-H bonds using substrates with an activated benzylic site to achieve high yields of alpha, alpha, alpha-trisubstituted amides. The synergistic combination of a rhodium(II) complex and tert-butylphenol sulfamate results in selective functionalization of the tertiary C(sp(3))-H bond under mild oxidative conditions. The catalytic system is robust, requiring only 0.01 mol % of catalyst for a 50 mmol scale reaction, and the TBPhs group can be easily removed to obtain NH-free amines.

Summary: Alkanes, as an abundant and inexpensive source of hydrocarbons, are of high interest for conversion into value-added chemicals. Development of new methods for this transformation is challenging due to the inertness of C-H bonds. Electronic modulation of cobalt complexes has led to enhanced amidation efficiency, with secondary C-H bond selectivity observed in nonactivated alkanes under the current protocol.
