Bioactive fluorcanasite reinforced magnesium alloy based porous bio-nanocomposite bone scaffold with controlled degradation

Adithya Garimella et al.

Summary: This study conducted research on the fabrication of biodegradable porous bone scaffolds based on magnesium alloys. Different alloying elements, such as calcium, zinc, and strontium, were incorporated into the magnesium metal matrix to control the degradation behavior. Bioactive fluorcanasite nanoparticles were also added to promote bone growth. The results showed that the inclusion of alloying elements retarded the degradation rate and the hydrogen evolution and pH studies aligned with the degradation behavior. Therefore, the fabricated magnesium alloy-based bio-nanocomposite scaffolds exhibit promising potential for bone tissue engineering.

Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloy based porous bone substitutes

Adithya Garimella et al.

Summary: Orthopedic implants based on magnesium (Mg) are considered promising metallic biomaterials due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and similar mechanical properties to human bone. However, the rapid degradation of pure Mg in physiological solutions limits its application as an implant material. This study focuses on biomimicking native human bone by fabricating porous Mg alloy-based bone scaffolds with alloying elements such as calcium and zinc. Mechanical testing reveals that the developed porous scaffolds have comparable and tunable mechanical properties to natural bone, indicating their potential as Mg-alloy based bone implants.
