Summary: This study introduces a multifunctional nanocellulose material, quaternized nanofibrillated cellulose (Q-NFC) anchored with nature-based p-coumaric acid (PCA) counterions, which shows excellent antibacterial and cytocompatible properties. The PCA-Q-NFC film exhibits superior antibacterial activity and cytocompatibility, as well as UV-blocking and oxygen-barrier properties. Other phenolic acids have also been tested to show the universal applicability of this strategy in various applications.
