Upcycling sawdust into colorant: Ecofriendly natural dyeing of fabrics with ultrasound assisted dye extract of Pterocarpus indicus Willd

Nadiya Kandasamy et al.

Summary: The study explores the dyeing potential of sawdust from Pterocarpus indicus Willd. as a natural dye source, using a method of ultrasound-assisted extraction to extract the dye. The use of natural mordants like gallnut, pomegranate rind, and gooseberry provided comparable fastness properties to metallic mordants, suggesting their exclusive use for eco-friendly dyeing. Additionally, pre-treatments with chitosan and myrobalan significantly enhanced the color strength, fastness, and UV protection of naturally dyed cotton and silk fabrics, with copper sulphate mordanting and chitosan pretreatment identified as the best combination for cotton fabrics and stannous chloride mordanting with myrobalan pretreatment for silk fabrics. Overall, the results indicate the potential for upcycling timber waste into natural dyes for environmentally friendly fabric coloration.
