Identification of electroporation sites in the complex lipid organization of the plasma membrane

Lea Rems et al.

Summary: The study investigates the molecular mechanisms of electroporation on the plasma membrane of biological cells. By combining molecular dynamics simulations, machine learning, and Bayesian survival analysis, the study identifies that the formation of pores depends on the local lipid organization and specific features of membrane domains. The study also reveals the importance of membrane mechanical properties and the polarity of the electric field in pore formation. The findings provide valuable insights for the design of future experiments and the development of accurate descriptions of plasma membrane electroporation.

Effect of the cholesterol on electroporation of planar lipid bilayer

Peter Kramar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of different cholesterol concentrations on the behavior of planar lipid bilayers under an electric field. The results showed no statistical difference in capacitance but a significant impact on breakdown voltage with the addition of cholesterol.

Cardiac ablation with pulsed electric fields: principles and biophysics

Alan Sugrue et al.

Summary: Pulsed electric fields (PEFs) have emerged as a new and promising modality for cardiac ablation, with ongoing clinical trials exploring their potential for treating arrhythmias. However, there is limited understanding of the principles and biophysics of PEF ablation, which differ from current energy modalities. This review aims to enhance academic research and optimize ablation parameters for maximizing procedure success and minimizing risks.

Bending Modulus of Lipid Membranes from Density Correlation Functions

Jose Hernandez-Munoz et al.

Summary: The bending modulus Kappa of biological membranes can be calculated using molecular dynamics simulations and the analysis of density correlation functions, without the need for defining a mesoscopic surface or an orientation field for lipid tails. By comparing the results obtained with different system sizes and models, the impact of different conditions on the elastic properties of biological membranes can be evaluated.

High-Frequency Irreversible Electroporation (H-FIRE) Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption Is Mediated by Cytoskeletal Remodeling and Changes in Tight Junction Protein Regulation

Brittanie R. Partridge et al.

Summary: Glioblastoma is a deadly malignant brain tumor that is difficult to treat effectively. A novel method called H-FIRE has been discovered to temporarily disrupt the blood-brain barrier, allowing for better delivery of chemotherapy drugs. The study found that H-FIRE can permeate the blood-brain barrier through cytoskeletal-mediated tight junction protein modulation, providing a potential application for localized and long-term enhanced intracranial drug delivery.

Atomistic calculations of thermal conductivity in films made from graphene sheets for electron emitter applications

S. N. Sami et al.

Summary: Simulations based on molecular dynamics were conducted for the thermal conductivity of carbon fibers, revealing a lower bulk thermal conductivity compared to silicon. This suggests potential thermal management issues and advises against using CF emitters below a certain length. The predicted slight increase in thermal conductivity with temperature may offer some relief, but carbon nanotubes could be a better alternative in the context of field emitter arrays.

Heat transfer and thermoregulation within single cells revealed by transient plasmonic imaging

Pei Song et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a transient microscopic method to measure heat transfer in single cells, revealing wide heterogeneity in thermal conductivity among different regions within a cell. The heat transfer near the cell membrane is more active than in the central region, while the median values of thermal conductivity across different individual cells are quite close. Furthermore, warm-blooded organisms like humans and chickens exhibit cellular-level heat regulation in response to environmental temperature, whereas cold-blooded organisms like bullfrogs do not.

Continuum analysis to assess field enhancements for tailoring electroporation driven by monopolar or bipolar pulsing based on nonuniformly distributed nanoparticles

Q. Hu et al.

Summary: Recent reports suggest that nanoparticle clusters near cell membranes can enhance local electric fields and lead to increased electroporation, especially under pulsed conditions. The results indicate a significant increase in transmembrane potentials (TMP) with the presence of multiple NP clusters, enabling enhanced poration even at sites far from the poles. Additionally, nonuniform distributions can facilitate poration at regions distant from the poles.
