Vibrational Properties in Highly Strained Hexagonal Boron Nitride Bubbles

Elena Blundo et al.

Summary: Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is widely used as a protective layer for few-atom-thick crystals and heterostructures (HSs), and it hosts quantum emitters working up to room temperature. The researchers presented a technique based on hydrogen irradiation to induce the formation of wrinkles and bubbles in hBN, resulting in high strains of about 2%. By combining infrared near-field scanning optical microscopy, micro-Raman measurements, and numerical calculations, the researchers characterized the response to strain for both IR-active and Raman-active modes, revealing the potential of hBN's vibrational properties as highly sensitive strain probes.

Role of defects and grain boundaries in the thermal response of wafer-scale hBN films

K. Bera et al.

Summary: This study on the thermal response of wafer-scale hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers reveals that strain evolution plays a dominant role in governing the characteristics of thinner films during heat treatment. Both defects and strain determine the spectral line-width of these large-scale films, indicating a potential reduction in thermal transport compared to their bulk counterparts.

Temperature dependent Raman modes of reduced graphene oxide: Effect of anharmonicity, crystallite size and defects

Meenu Sharma et al.

Summary: The temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) reveals the combined effect of anharmonicity, crystallite size, and defects on the peak positions and line widths of G- and D- modes. The dominance of true-anharmonic part in shifting the peak positions is indicated by theoretical models. The contributions of electron-phonon coupling, anharmonicity, and defects to the temperature dependent variation of line width are discussed.
