TGA-DSC Combined Coal Analysis as a Tool for QC (Quality Control) and Reactivity Patterns of Coals

Aviv Hassid et al.

Summary: Coal is a major fuel source for power generation worldwide. Its price is determined by its calorific value, but volatiles, ash, and moisture content also play important roles in quality control. This study utilizes combined TGA/DSC analysis to evaluate the reactivity patterns of aliphatic and aromatic content in coals, providing a better understanding of their combustion process.

Long-term stability prediction of polyacrylamide-type polymers at harsh conditions via thermogravimetric analysis

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a facile way for long-term stability prediction of polyacrylamide-type polymers at high temperature and high salinity reservoir conditions using thermogravimetric analysis technology. The pyrolysis behaviors and long-term stability in solution of nine polyacrylamide-type polymers were investigated. The activation energies of the polymers were correlated with half-life from viscosity measurements to estimate stability, and the decomposition rates of polymer molecular weight were found to have good correlations with half-lives and activation energies, indicating that molecular weight reduction results in solution viscosity loss.

Thermogravimetric assessment of the thermal degradation during combustion of crude and pure glycerol

Manar Almazrouei et al.

Summary: According to the US EIA, the USA produced 6.88 million cubic meters of pure biodiesel in 2020. Other countries, such as Brazil, Germany, and Indonesia, also reported significant biodiesel production. This high production has resulted in a large amount of waste glycerol from transesterification. In this study, the combustion characteristics of crude and pure glycerol were compared using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The results showed that both samples had a main combustion process at around 150-325 degrees C, but crude glycerol had three decomposition stages compared to one stage in pure glycerol.

Thermal degradation behavior of ionic liquid/fluorinated polymer composites: Effect of polymer type and ionic liquid anion and cation

J. C. Dias et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the thermal degradation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers in composite films with different imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs), finding that the incorporation of ILs decreases thermal stability and longer cation chain lengths lead to decreased thermal stability in the composite material. Activation energy for thermal degradation ranged from 161 ± 6 kJ mol-1 to 131 ± 14 kJ mol-1, with no significant differences observed in the impact of IL inclusion in various polymer matrices.
