Improved catalyst formulations for the conversion of glycerol to bio-based aromatics

Songbo He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic conversion of glycerol to aromatics using a shaped H-ZSM-5/Al2O3 catalyst and explores the effect of adding Al2O3 binder on catalyst performance. The results show that the addition of Al2O3 binder increases the catalyst's lifetime and improves the total BTX productivity. However, irreversible deactivation occurs after multiple regenerations.

Pressurized ex-situ catalytic co-pyrolysis of polyethylene and lignin: Efficient BTEX production and process mechanism analysis

Linyao Ke et al.

Summary: In this study, the ex-situ catalytic co-pyrolysis of polyethylene and lignin over HZSM-5 under different pressures was investigated. The results showed that the pressurized operation during co-pyrolysis led to an increase in BTEX yield while maintaining catalyst stability. The ratio of the two raw materials significantly affected hydrogen radicals-mass transfer efficiency, which in turn affected the production of BTEX. Additionally, pressurized operation had a dual positive effect on coke inhibition and water release, promoting catalyst stability and BTEX production.

Haoran Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of mesoporous structure parameters on the diffusion of heavy phenols and the regulation of pyrolysis products in cellulolytic enzyme lignin catalytic conversion was investigated. A micromesostructured composite zeolite (ZMA) with internal hierarchical pores and ununiform mesolayer shell was found to have the most suitable mesostructure for the process, showing improved accessibility of inner acidic sites and providing a balance between aromatic yield and product distribution. Additionally, different mesostructures required varied applicable catalyst to lignin ratios, with ZMA and hierarchical samples suitable for higher and lower ratios, respectively.

Jiayu Feng et al.

Summary: The introduction of cerium was found to significantly improve the performance and regeneration ability of the sorbent for PH3 removal. Analytical techniques such as XRD, XPS, and BET showed that cerium doping not only increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the sorbent, but also enhanced the chemisorption oxygen on the surface. SEM-EDS and H-2-TPR analyses demonstrated that cerium species played a crucial role in dispersing copper species and improving the oxidation performance.

Summary: Biomass-derived materials have great potential as an alternative templating agent for tailoring new pore systems in zeolites to enhance catalyst properties. In this study, hierarchical ZSM-5 was prepared with the assistance of alkaline lignin and showed improved catalytic performance in co-pyrolysis of softwood biomass and LDPE mixture. The enlarged pore openings in hierarchical ZSM-5 facilitated the passage of reactive species and resulted in higher selectivity of desirable aromatic hydrocarbons and coke formation inhibition compared to parent zeolite.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of beech wood lignin isolated by different biomass (pre)treatment processes: Organosolv, hydrothermal and enzymatic hydrolysis

A. G. Margellou et al.

Summary: The study explores the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis of three types of lignin derived from the same biomass but with different isolation processes. The results show that mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites exhibit higher dealkoxylation reactivity compared to microporous ZSM-5, leading to higher concentrations of BTX aromatics without a significant increase in PAHs. The observed variations in the characteristics of the lignin types did not result in substantial differentiation in the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis product yields and composition.
