The discharge performance of an as-extruded Mg-Zn-La-Ce anode for the primary Mg-air battery

Xingrui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the electrochemical properties and discharge performance of La-rich Mischmetal modified Mg-2Zn as candidate anode materials for the Mg-air primary battery. The experimental results showed that alloying introduced tiny second-phase particles, which improved the discharge voltage and capacity, while reducing self-corrosion and suppressing the anodic hydrogen reaction.

Effect of microstructure evolution on the discharge characteristics of Al-Mg-Sn-based anodes for Al-air batteries

Zibin Wu et al.

Summary: The microstructure of Al-0.5Mg-0.1Sn alloys was controlled by rolling deformation and subsequent annealing process, and its influence on electrochemical performance and discharge behavior was discussed. The results showed that the low-temperature annealed alloy had mainly low-angle grain boundaries, which improved corrosion resistance and provided more active sites for discharge reaction. However, high-temperature annealing increased the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries, which had negative effects on anode efficiency.

Influence of heat treatment on the discharge performance of Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys as anodes for the Mg-air battery

Xingrui Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of heat treatment to improve the battery performance of cast Mg-6Zn and Mg-8Al anodes for primary Mg-air batteries. The results showed that heat-treated anodes had higher discharge voltage and smoother exfoliation of discharge products, leading to improved discharge capacity and anodic efficiency. Heat treatment also suppressed the anodic hydrogen reaction and dissolved harmful large-sized precipitates.

Interface engineering of Co3Fe7-Fe3C heterostructure as an efficient oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst for aluminum-air batteries

Min Jiang et al.

Summary: Aluminum-air batteries, with their high theoretical energy densities, low cost, and eco-friendliness, are potential candidates for next-generation energy storage and conversion systems. Rational design of efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral and alkaline solutions is crucial for the performance of these batteries. A new interface engineering strategy has been proposed to create a Co3Fe7-Fe3C heterostructure with abundant interfaces anchored on 3D honeycomb-like N-doped carbon, leading to remarkable catalytic activity and stability towards ORR. This work demonstrates a novel approach to designing multifunctional catalysts with interfacial structures for high-performance metal-air batteries.

The influence of heat treatment on discharge and electrochemical properties of Mg-Gd-Zn magnesium anode with long period stacking ordered structure for Mg-air battery

Xingrui Chen et al.

Summary: The influence of heat treatment on the discharge and electrochemical properties of Mg95.28Gd3.72Zr1.00 alloy as an anode for Mg-air battery was investigated. The T6 heat treated alloy showed improved discharge performance with good specific energy output. The LPSO structure in the alloy plays a key role in enhancing the dissolution of alpha-Mg and exfoliation of discharge products. Conversely, the (Mg, Zn)(3)Gd phase resulted in a passive film formation and voltage drop.
