Interfacial reaction and side effect of MgB2 superconducting material through low-rotation mechanical milling

Minoru Maeda et al.

Summary: Powder processing by ball milling is an effective method for structural modification of superconducting materials. Low-rotation shaker was used to achieve structural modification by controlling processing parameters and enhancing energy transfer. The morphological changes of the processed powders influenced the void structure and composition of the materials.

Thermo-hydraulic and economic aspects of long-length high-power MgB2 superconducting cables

Steffen Kloeppel et al.

Summary: The increasing share of renewable energy in the European grid requires long-length, high-power transmission lines. Superconducting cables, particularly using MgB2 superconductors, offer significant energy and space savings but require operation at very low temperatures. A simple thermo-hydraulic model is developed to assess the dimensions of a cryogenic envelope around a high-power MgB2 cable, with findings showing cost reductions compared to traditional resistive links at a transmitted power of 6.4 GW. Further cost savings are possible through optimization strategies.

Evaluation and control of residual amorphous phases in carbon-doped MgB2 superconductors

Seyong Choi et al.

Summary: The evaluation and control of amorphous phases in materials are crucial in optimizing their properties. This study focuses on the effects of residual amorphous impurities on the superconducting performance of polycrystalline MgB2 materials prepared with hydrocarbon doping. Carbon doping is effective for enhancing the transport critical current, and different doping methods significantly impact the formation of MgB2 phase and subsequent superconducting properties.

Critical current density defined at low electric field criterion and energy margin of superconducting MgB2 wires in wide temperature and magnetic field range

Motomune Kodama et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the critical current density of MgB2 wires and shows the critical line and iso energy-margin lines on the temperature-magnetic field plane. The study demonstrates that MgB2 wires have a significantly larger energy margin than NbTi wires, making them highly unlikely to be quenched due to mechanical disturbances.
