Sodium chloride stimulates the biomass and astaxanthin production by Haematococcus pluvialis via a two-stage cultivation strategy

Qingqing Li et al.

Summary: A major challenge in astaxanthin industrialization is the low productivity and high production costs. This study established a two-stage cultivation strategy using NaCl to improve biomass and astaxanthin production by Haematococcus pluvialis. NaCl application significantly enhanced biomass and astaxanthin content, while salinity stress also increased lipids and GABA contents and provided insights into the biosynthesis mechanism of astaxanthin.

Sustainable cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis and Chromochloris zofingiensis for the production of astaxanthin and co-products

Gannoru Kankanamalage Sanuji Hasara Nishshanka et al.

Summary: Cultivating microalgae using wastewater reduces water consumption and provides nutrients, with the potential for developing high-value product first biorefineries. Haematococcus pluvialis and Chromochloris zofingiensis cultivated in synthetic dairy wastewater achieved biomass concentrations of 0.55 g/L and 0.65 g/L, with astaxanthin contents of 2.1% and 0.4% respectively. The study also showed good wastewater treatment and phycoremediation capabilities, with residual biomass suitable for biorefining.

A Two-Step Process for Improved Biomass Production and Non-Destructive Astaxanthin and Carotenoids Accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis

Arianna Rizzo et al.

Summary: This study investigated a simple and economical method to cultivate Haematococcus pluvialis by exploring alternative strategies to maximize algal growth and astaxanthin yield. By adjusting nitrogen sources and using a mix of moderate stressors, the study found that the highest cell density and growth rate could be achieved, along with an increase in astaxanthin yield.

Foliar application of flavonoids (rutin) regulates phytoremediation efficiency of Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. by altering the permeability of cell membranes and immobilizing excess Cd in the cell wall

Yuchen Kang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the efficiency of phytoremediation by enhancing Cd tolerance in Amaranthus hypochondriacus through exogenous rutin application. The addition of rutin reduced cell membrane damage, increased Cd immobilization in the cell wall, and advanced the conversion of glutathione to phytochelatins, leading to higher Cd accumulation in the leaves. Overall, the efficiency of phytoremediation and phytoextraction of Amaranthus hypochondriacus were significantly increased with rutin application, providing a constructive approach for soil remediation in Cd-contaminated fields.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid facilitates the simultaneous production of biomass, astaxanthin and lipids in Haematococcus pluvialis under salinity and high-light stress conditions

Qingqing Li et al.

Summary: Under combined salinity stress and high-light stresses, treatment with 0.25 mM GABA led to the highest biomass, astaxanthin production, and lipids content in Haematococcus pluvialis. GABA also increased transcript levels of biosynthesis genes, endogenous GABA and carbohydrates, while decreasing reactive oxygen species levels. The intracellular GABA was found to regulate cell growth, astaxanthin production, and lipids synthesis through mediating carotenogenesis, lipogenesis, and ROS signalling.

The oleaginous astaxanthin-producing alga Chromochloris zofingiensis: potential from production to an emerging model for studying lipid metabolism and carotenogenesis

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Chromochloris zofingiensis is considered a promising feedstock for biodiesel production due to its ability to accumulate high levels of triacylglycerol and synthesize high-value keto-carotenoids. With the development of genetic tools, C. zofingiensis has become an emerging model for studying lipid metabolism and carotenogenesis, and strategies for trait improvements in triacylglycerol and astaxanthin synthesis have been discussed.

Chlorophyll fluorescence-A tool to assess photosynthetic performance and stress photophysiology in symbiotic marine invertebrates and seaplants

Ranjeet Bhagooli et al.

Summary: Chlorophyll a fluorescence is a valuable tool for assessing photosynthetic performance in marine autotrophs, providing rapid, non-invasive, sensitive and convenient measurements. This technique, including tools like Pulse-Amplitude-Modulated (PAM) and Fast Repetition Rate (FRR) fluorometry, is widely used in marine studies to measure natural variations, stress responses, and adaptation to changing environments. Stressors can include environmental, biological, physical, and chemical factors, and the strengths, limitations, and future perspectives of using chlorophyll fluorescence in assessing symbiotic marine organisms and seaplants are carefully evaluated.
