Overweight in mood disorders: Effects on morbidity and treatment response

Alessandro Miola et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between BMI and psychiatric diagnosis, clinical, and demographic factors in major affective disorder subjects. The research found that overweight or obese affective disorder subjects were more likely to be male, older, married, have lower education levels, and live in less densely populated areas. In addition, they were more likely to have bipolar disorder, familial mood disorders, higher serum triglyceride levels, and less improvement in depression ratings with treatment.

Peripheral levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β across the mood spectrum in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of mean differences and variability

Marco Solmi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare inflammatory mediators in bipolar disorder (BD) with healthy controls, finding that CRP and TNF-alpha may be state markers as they were only elevated during mood episodes, while IL-6 appeared to be a trait marker for BD. The variability of specific inflammatory mediators in specific disease active states suggests that some BD subjects may exhibit elevated inflammation during manic or depressive episodes.

Summary: A genome-wide association study of 41,917 bipolar disorder cases and 371,549 controls of European ancestry revealed 64 associated genomic loci, enriched in genes related to synaptic signaling pathways and brain-expressed genes. The study also identified potential therapeutic leads and drug targets, highlighting the complex genetic correlations between bipolar disorder subtypes and providing insights into the disorder's etiology.

Extensive bidirectional genetic overlap between bipolar disorder and cardiovascular disease phenotypes

Linn Rodevand et al.

Summary: The study reveals extensive polygenic overlap between bipolar disorder (BIP) and comorbid cardiovascular diseases (CVD), suggesting shared molecular genetic mechanisms. The shared loci exhibit a pattern of mixed effect directions, indicating variation in genetic susceptibility to CVD among BIP subgroups, which may explain the heterogeneity of CVD comorbidity in BIP patients. Therefore, the findings suggest a focus on targeted lifestyle interventions and personalized pharmacological treatment to reduce CVD comorbidity in BIP patients.

Symptoms of bipolar disorder are associated with lower bariatric surgery completion rates and higher food addiction*

Allison A. Holgerson et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with possible bipolar disorder had lower rates of undergoing bariatric surgery, as well as higher rates of food addiction, subthreshold binge eating disorder, and illegal drug use. In summary, more research is needed to help patients with bipolar disorder symptoms manage their obesity and behavioral challenges.
