Physical Health Burden Among Older Men and Women With Bipolar Disorder: Results From the Gage-Bd Collaboration

Osvaldo P. Almeida et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of physical morbidities among older adults with bipolar disorder and found that women with the disorder were more likely to have respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and endocrinological diseases, while men with the disorder were more likely to have cardiovascular, renal, and endocrinological diseases. Further investigation is needed to understand the underlying reasons for these differences.

Cognition in older adults with bipolar disorder: An ISBD task force systematic review and meta-analysis based on a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment

Laura Montejo et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, we found that cognitive dysfunction is present in euthymic older adults with bipolar disorder, with significant deficits in almost all cognitive domains, especially in the memory domain. This highlights the importance of including a routine complete neuropsychological assessment and considering therapeutic strategies for this population.

Identifying neurocognitive heterogeneity in Older Adults with Bipolar Disorder: a cluster analysis

Laura Montejo et al.

Summary: This study found significant cognitive heterogeneity in older adults with bipolar disorder, with patients being divided into three distinct clusters based on the severity of cognitive impairment. Factors such as older age, late onset, higher number of psychiatric admissions, and lower psychosocial functioning were associated with greater cognitive impairment. Conversely, factors like younger age, more education, and higher estimated IQ were associated with preserved cognitive functioning.

Symptom Severity Mixity in Older-Age Bipolar Disorder: Analyses From the Global Aging and Geriatric Experiments in Bipolar Disorder Database (GAGE-BD)

Lisa T. Eyler et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the symptom mixity in older-age bipolar disorder (OABD) and its association with everyday function. The results showed that mixed features are predominant in OABD and are associated with worse everyday function. Among those with mixed symptoms, the severity of depression is the main driver of poorer functioning.

Prevention of suicidal behavior in bipolar disorder

Leonardo Tondo et al.

Summary: Suicide risk is significantly higher in individuals with BD compared to other psychiatric disorders, with notable factors including previous suicidal behavior, depression, and mood instability. Current suicide-preventing therapeutics for BD are underdeveloped, with stronger evidence supporting lithium treatment.

The impact of the trajectory of bipolar disorder on global cognitive function: A one-year clinical prospective case-control study

Ulla Knorr et al.

Summary: The study found that cognitive function in patients with BD did not change when stabilized in euthymia following an affective episode, and showed a practice effect, improving within a year for both BD patients and healthy controls. Additionally, cognitive functions were not related to clinical subtypes, prior psychosis, relapse polarity, and week-to-week mood fluctuations, but weak to moderately correlated with weekly mood fluctuations.

Cognitive heterogeneity is a key predictor of differential functional outcome in patients with bipolar disorder

Katherine E. Burdick et al.

Summary: Bipolar disorder is a complex illness with varying levels of cognitive dysfunction, with some patients indistinguishable from healthy individuals while others experience severe deficits similar to schizophrenia. Research is focusing on identifying homogeneous subgroups and potential predictors of cognitive decline for guiding novel treatments.

Emotional cognition subgroups in mood disorders: Associations with familial risk

Cristina Varo et al.

Summary: Patients with mood disorders exhibit heterogeneity in emotional cognition, with three clusters identified: 'emotionally preserved', 'emotionally blunted' and 'emotionally volatile'. These emotional cognition profiles are associated with non-emotional cognition and familial risk, highlighting the importance of screening and treating emotional cognition in mood disorders.

Cognitive performance in older-age bipolar disorder: Investigating psychiatric characteristics, cardiovascular burden and psychotropic medication

Summary: Psychiatric characteristics, cardiovascular risk, and benzodiazepine use are all related to cognitive performance in older-age bipolar disorder (OABD). Strategies to improve cognition in BD should focus on managing cardiovascular risk factors and reducing benzodiazepine use.

Defining Heterogeneous Cognitive Trajectories in Bipolar Disorder: A Perspective

Caitlin E. Millett et al.

Summary: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a highly disabling mental illness affecting approximately 1% of the global population. Cognitive capacity is a strong predictor of functional outcomes in BD, with varying cognitive subtypes in the disorder. Studying these subtypes, longitudinal trajectories, and biological underpinnings is crucial for improving patient outcomes.
