The assessment of fractal dimensions with the direct use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images from blast-cleaned steel substrates

Tom Marquardt et al.

Summary: This study assessed the fractal parameters of blast-cleaned substrates using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The results showed that different factors did not significantly affect the fractal dimensions, indicating that the direct use of SEM images is not suitable for estimating the fractal dimensions of blast-cleaned steel substrates.

Classified substrate roughness parameters of blast-cleaned steel substrates and their effects on fractal dimensions

Tom Marquardt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of morphology parameters of metal substrate surfaces on fractal dimensions, and proposes a new classification scheme for profile parameters. The importance of roughness parameters and surface profile sections on fractal dimensions was evaluated, and the roughness parameter that best explains fractal dimensions was identified.

Fractal dimensions of blast-cleaned steel surfaces and their effects on the adhesion of polymeric foil systems with integrated pressure-sensitive adhesives

T. Marquardt et al.

Summary: The morphology and structure of substrate surfaces are crucial for the adhesion of protective layers. This study investigated the impact of surface profile parameters on the adhesion of polymeric foil systems by preparing mild steel samples with different surface configurations. Fractal dimensions were found to be more accurate than conventional roughness parameters in quantifying adhesion.
