Microstructure Analysis and Thermal Characteristics of NiTiHf Shape Memory Alloy with Different Composition

S. Buytoz et al.

Summary: Improving the microstructural analysis of shape memory alloys, particularly NiTiHf alloys, is crucial for various applications. Adding more hafnium in NiTiHf alloys can increase phase transformation temperatures but decrease enthalpy change for endo/exothermic processes. Oxidation studies reveal different microstructures, such as needle-like shapes and plate-like Ti-rich microstructures, depending on the composition of Ni and Hf elements in the alloys.

Theoretical Analysis of Hysteresis and Characteristic Transition Temperatures of Iron-Based Memory Metals

V. Sampath et al.

Summary: The correlation between the valence electrons per atom (e(v)/a) and the characteristic transition temperatures of quaternary and quinary Fe-based shape memory alloys has been investigated. Regression equations relating their transformation temperatures (M-s, A(s)) to composition and e(v)/a have been obtained. It was found that on adding alloying elements to the SMAs, their transformation temperatures get altered in three distinct trends related to their e(v)/a ratio. The correlation between the transformation hysteresis and the atom diameter of the alloying elements was also analyzed.

Role of Nickel Content in One-Way and Two-Way Shape Recovery in Binary Ti-Ni Alloys

Elena P. Ryklina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the shape recovery characteristics of titanium nickelide with nickel contents of 50.0% and 50.7%, and found that the nickel content strongly impacts the shape recovery characteristics and grain/subgrain size. The total recovery strain was found to reach a maximum of 13.5-15% in equiatomic alloy and 20% in Ni-rich alloy.

Influence of annealing temperature on microstructure and shape memory effect in austenite-martensite duplex Ni47Ti44Nb9 rolled sheets

Mingyan Sun et al.

Summary: The evolution of phase composition and microstructure in austenite-martensite duplex Ni47Ti44Nb9 rolled sheets during annealing was studied. Different annealing temperatures led to variation in phase composition and microstructure, affecting grain size, dislocation, and crystallographic texture. Sheets annealed at 600 degrees C exhibited higher recoverability compared to those annealed at 950 degrees C due to the combined effect of grain size, dislocation, and crystallographic texture.

Deformation Behavior, Structure and Properties of an Equiatomic Ti-Ni Shape Memory Alloy Compressed in a Wide Temperature Range

Victor Komarov et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flow curves and properties of an equiatomic Ti-Ni shape memory alloy at temperatures ranging from 100 to 900 degrees C. It was found that the optimal deformation temperature range for achieving high strains and improved functional properties is between 300-500 degrees C. Additionally, post-deformation annealing at temperatures above the deformation temperature led to a decrease in lattice defectness and a significant increase in shape recovery characteristics.

Design of NiTi-based shape memory microcomposites with enhanced elastocaloric performance by a fully thermomechanical coupled phase-field model

Cheikh Cisse et al.

Summary: By using a thermomechanical coupled phase-field model, this study designs microarchitectures in NiTi matrix with different types, shapes, and volume fractions of non-transforming intermetallics, showing the potential to increase the coefficient of performance (COP) of elastocaloric composites by controlling processing parameters. Different arrangements and compositions of intermetallics can lead to significant variations in COP values, indicating the importance of selecting intermetallics with specific properties for achieving high COP.
