Dual-phase hetero-structured strategy to improve ductility of a low carbon martensitic steel

J. X. Huang et al.

Summary: The martensitic transformation greatly enhances the strength of low-carbon steels, but usually at the expense of ductility. By creating a dual-phase heterostructure through annealing and cold rolling, a high strength and ductility combination steel was achieved. The hetero-deformation induced stress in the sample contributed to the improved mechanical properties of the steel.

Direct Atomic-Scale Observation of Ultrasmall Ag Nanowires that Exhibit fcc, bcc, and hcp Structures under Bending

Shiduo Sun et al.

Summary: Metals usually exhibit one crystal structure, but this study shows that bending can cause fcc-structured Ag to access all three crystal structures. The complete process of transitioning from fcc to bcc, hcp, and finally re-oriented fcc structure was observed in situ.

Tracking the sliding of grain boundaries at the atomic scale

Lihua Wang et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries (GBs) are crucial for the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline materials, yet the atomic-scale dynamic processes of GB deformation remain unclear. This study presents an in situ atomic-resolution investigation on how sliding-dominant deformation occurs at general tilt GBs in platinum bicrystals, involving direct atomic-scale sliding and sliding with atom transfer across the boundary plane.

Strengthening and ductilization of laminate dual-phase steels with high martensite content

Bo Gao et al.

Summary: By tailoring the microstructural features, steels with excellent strength and ductility can be achieved. In this work, laminate dual-phase (DP) steels with high martensite content were produced, leading to significantly improved strength and ductility. The influence of laminate structure and high martensite content were discussed, along with the strengthening and ductilizing mechanisms.

Effect of stacking fault energy on deformation mechanisms in Cu and Cu-30% Zn alloy with gradient structure obtained by SMAT

Xiaomin Liu et al.

Summary: The study focused on the deformation mechanism and mechanical properties of pure copper and copper-zinc alloys with low stacking fault energy. It was found that Cu-30%Zn samples exhibited higher yield strength and better ductility compared to pure Cu samples. Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) resulted in an optimized combination of strength and ductility in the Cu-30%Zn samples.

Summary: The study revealed that different volume fractions and distributions of martensite can lead to different damage modes in ferrite-martensite dual-phase steels. Through mesoscale stress and strain analysis, we identified the origins of these damage modes.

Enhanced mechanical properties of dual phase steel via cross rolling and intercritical annealing

Maryam Soleimani et al.

Summary: Cross rolling and intercritical annealing is proposed as an alternative processing route for dual-phase steels, resulting in refined ferrite grains and evenly distributed martensite islands. This processed low-carbon steel exhibits improved strength-ductility balance, higher hardness, and greater work hardening exponent.

Micro-laminated and ultrafine-grained dual-phase steel plates generated via intercritical rolling followed by water quenching

Summary: By changing the reheating temperature, the microstructure of the dual-phase steel can be controlled, improving the tensile strength and yield strength while refining the ferrite grain size. As the reheating temperature decreases, the downward trend of tensile ductility is nearly stopped.
