Multimodal Nonopioid Pain Protocol Provides Better or Equivalent Pain Control Compared to Opioid Analgesia Following Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial

Toufic R. Jildeh et al.

Summary: The study showed that a multimodal nonopioid pain protocol provided better pain control compared to traditional opioid analgesics in patients undergoing primary arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Minimal side effects were noted with some improvement in the multimodal nonopioid pain cohort. All patients reported satisfaction with their pain management.

Perioperative nonopioid analgesia reduces postoperative opioid consumption in knee arthroscopy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Aaron Gazendam et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of perioperative nonopioid adjunct analgesia on postoperative opioid consumption and pain control in patients undergoing knee arthroscopy, including preemptive and postoperative nonopioid pain medications, saphenous nerve blocks, and cryotherapy. The results showed that these interventions significantly reduced opioid consumption and pain scores at 24 hours postoperatively.

Multimodal Nonopioid Pain Protocol Provides Equivalent Pain Versus Opioid Control Following Meniscus Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial

Toufic R. Jildeh et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of a nonopioid pain regimen with a traditional opioid pain control in postoperative pain management following primary meniscectomy or meniscal repair. The nonopioid regimen was found to provide equivalent pain control and patient outcomes compared to the opioid regimen, with similar side effect profiles.

Editorial Commentary: Opioid Sparing Through Patient Education Programs Is the Future for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery to Optimize Outcome

Michael J. Rossi

Summary: Research in opioid usage in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery has shown that preoperative opioid use can lead to increased postoperative usage, readmission rates, and medical complications, resulting in poorer outcome. Strategies to combat these negative effects include ownership and acknowledgment of the problem, adherence to opioid prescribing protocols, and use of a multimodal anesthesia program. Patient education programs to modify risk factors and manage expectations may also be beneficial in optimizing patient outcome.
