Significance of gene variants for the functional biogeography of the near-surface Atlantic Ocean microbiome

Leon Dlugosch et al.

Summary: This study reveals distinct taxonomic and functional adaptations of microbial communities in the near-surface Atlantic and Southern Ocean, showing finely tuned genetic adaptations to regional conditions. Gene profiles exhibited higher distance-decay rates and biotic factors were identified as highly influential in explaining the observed patterns in functional profiles. Temperature and biogeographic province mainly explained the observed taxonomic patterns.

Availability of vitamin B12 and its lower ligand intermediate α-ribazole impact prokaryotic and protist communities in oceanic systems

Gerrit Wienhausen et al.

Summary: Genome analyses reveal that the majority of prokaryotes rely on exogenous supply of cobalamin (vitamin B-12) and interact with producers. A study conducted in different regions of the Pacific Ocean shows that the availability of B-12 and alpha-ribazole enhances heterotrophic prokaryotic production and alters the composition of prokaryotic and heterotrophic protist communities.

pr2-primers: An 18S rRNA primer database for protists

Daniel Vaulot et al.

Summary: Metabarcoding of microbial eukaryotes has greatly advanced in the past decade, with the development of a database listing 285 primers and 83 unique primer pairs used for eukaryotic 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding. An R-based web application has been developed to assist researchers in making informed primer choices and including protists in their investigations.

The overlooked role of a biotin precursor for marine bacteria-desthiobiotin as an escape route for biotin auxotrophy

Gerrit Wienhausen et al.

Summary: Biotin is an essential micronutrient for many organisms and its availability in the ocean fluctuates greatly. Bacteria can overcome biotin auxotrophy by utilizing desthiobiotin, which serves as a precursor for biotin synthesis. The presence of the bioB gene in bacteria and the availability of desthiobiotin are crucial for this process.

Composition and Biogeography of Planktonic Pro- and Eukaryotic Communities in the Atlantic Ocean: Primer Choice Matters

Felix Milke et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed investigation of the Atlantic Ocean microbiome using universal PCR primers, revealing the impact of primer choice on community composition and biogeographic patterns. The study confirms the presence of a latitudinal diversity gradient and an inverse bell-shaped distance-decay relationship, and highlights the importance of considering sampling and sequencing depth and abundance filtering in analyzing richness patterns.

Comprehensive single-PCR 16S and 18S rRNA community analysis validated with mock communities, and estimation of sequencing bias against 18S

Yi-Chun Yeh et al.

Summary: Universal primers for SSU rRNA genes have the potential to generate comprehensive microbiome profiles, as demonstrated by a study utilizing mock communities and field samples. The study showed that universal primers outperformed eukaryote-specific primers in terms of observed versus expected abundance correlations, but also highlighted issues such as underestimation of certain taxa and length biases in sequencing.

Microbial Growth and Organic Matter Cycling in the Pacific Ocean Along a Latitudinal Transect Between Subarctic and Subantarctic Waters

Helge-Ansgar Giebel et al.

Summary: The study investigated microbial and geochemical variables in the upper 200 m of the water column along a transect from the subantarctic to the subarctic Pacific. The results revealed distinct patterns among different regions and close covariations between microbial variables and chlorophyll a, POC, and PON, contributing to a better understanding of microbial organic matter processing in the large areas of the epipelagic Pacific.
