The evolution and role of eukaryotic-like domains in environmental intracellular bacteria: the battle with a eukaryotic cell

Jessica E. Martyn et al.

Summary: Intracellular pathogens have cellular biology tools to influence their eukaryotic host and use protein secretion systems and molecular effectors to manipulate host cells. These effectors function in a eukaryotic context and mimic or inhibit eukaryotic proteins. Environmental intracellular bacteria have a higher number of eukaryotic-like domains and proteins compared to bacteria specialized to an isolated niche.

Lineage-specific energy and carbon metabolism of sponge symbionts and contributions to the host carbon pool

I. Burgsdorf et al.

Summary: Marine sponges harbor diverse microorganisms with versatile carbon and energy metabolism modes. The main microbial carbon fixation pathways include the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle, and the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle. Genomic potential may not accurately reflect autotrophs' actual contribution, and radioisotope assays emphasize the importance of validating genomic potential with physiological experiments.

Database resources of the National Center for Biotechnology Information

Eric W. Sayers et al.

Summary: The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) offers a wide range of online resources for biological information and data, including GenBank (R) nucleic acid sequence database and PubMed (R) database of citations and abstracts. Entrez system allows search and retrieval operations for most of these data, with E-utilities serving as the programming interface. Additional resources such as PMC, Bookshelf, Genome Data Viewer, SRA, ClinVar, dbSNP, dbVar, Pathogen Detection, BLAST, Primer-BLAST, IgBLAST, iCn3D, and PubChem are also accessible through the NCBI home page.

A genomic view of the microbiome of coral reef demosponges

S. J. Robbins et al.

Summary: Sponges harbor diverse symbiotic microbes that can degrade organic matter in coral reef ecosystems. These symbionts contain functional compositions that can degrade coral reef organic matter, and many sponge-enriched genes are laterally transferred between microbial taxa.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Community-led, integrated, reproducible multi-omics with anvi'o

A. Murat Eren et al.

Summary: In microbiology, there is an abundance of big data, but the workflows designed to interpret the data may constrain the biological questions that can be asked. Anvi'o, a community-led multi-omics platform, is maturing into an open software ecosystem that reduces constraints in 'omics data analyses.

Intracellular bacteria are common and taxonomically diverse in cultured and in hospite algal endosymbionts of coral reefs

Justin Maire et al.

Summary: This study examines the interactions between Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria, revealing the presence of bacteria inside Symbiodiniaceae cells as well as closely associated with their external cell surface. Different species of Symbiodiniaceae harbor distinct and highly diverse bacterial communities, which might be involved in the physiology of Symbiodiniaceae.

Bacterial and archaeal symbioses with protists

Filip Husnik et al.

Summary: The genetic, cellular, and biochemical diversity of life is largely found within single-celled organisms such as prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes. Close interactions between protists and prokaryotes, dating back at least two billion years, play a significant role in ecology. The study of diverse protist symbioses is shedding light on the broader impact of these systems on symbiosis theory.
