Pore and fracture development in coal under stress conditions based on nuclear magnetic resonance and fractal theory

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper conducted triaxial compression tests on coal samples using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) testing system, investigated the development of pores and fractures in coal under stress conditions, proposed a new method for estimating crack-initiation stresses, and analyzed the fractal dimensions of pores.

An adsorption model for cylindrical pore and its method to calculate pore size distribution of coal by combining NMR

Chaolin Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an extended simplified local density adsorption (SLD) model and combines it with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests to predict the adsorption amount and pore size distribution of coal samples. The results are beneficial for the prediction and calculation of coal adsorption amount and pore size distribution.

Damage analysis of sandstone during the creep stage under the different levels of uniaxial stress using NMR measurements

Hao Cheng et al.

Summary: NMR measurements were used to evaluate micro-cracking characteristics of sandstones during the creep stage, finding that small pores evolved into larger ones, increasing rock damage. As the loading ratio increased, the rate of porosity growth sharply increased, especially under high loading ratios. Damage evolution was found to be anisotropic and exponentially related to the loading ratio during creep.

Quantitative analysis of fracture dynamic evolution in coal subjected to uniaxial and triaxial compression loads based on industrial CT and fractal theory

Dengke Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamic evolution of fractures in coal under different compressive loads using X-ray computer tomography. Results show that confining pressure and minerals significantly impact fracture propagation in coal, and fractal dimension can quantitatively characterize the evolution process of three-dimensional fractures.

Observation on microstructure and shear behavior of mortar due to thermal shock

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the shear behavior of intact and pre-flawed mortar after high-temperature treatment, showing that thermal-induced cracks propagate and open up with increased exposed temperature, and structural damage is more serious under water-cooled conditions. Flawed specimens are more vulnerable to thermal shock, with internal fracture models indicating different crack initiation and propagation patterns for intact and flawed specimens. The shear strength of mortar after high-temperature treatment follows the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, with peak shear strength and shear modulus deteriorating over exposed temperature and influenced by cooling treatment, specifically exacerbating with rapid cooling.

Evolutions of the unfrozen water content of saturated sandstones during freezing process and the freeze-induced damage characteristics

Lei Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, LF-NMR tests were conducted on frozen sandstone samples to analyze the unfrozen water content and changes in the freezing process. The experimental results show that the pore size distribution significantly affects the speed of water-ice phase transition, with larger pores leading to faster transitions. Freeze-induced strains in frozen sandstones increase rapidly between 0 degrees C to -10 degrees C, then stabilize, and the impact of movable water on freezing strain depends on pore size distribution.
