Order fulfillment policies for ship-from-store implementation in omni-channel retailing

Armagan Bayram et al.

Summary: Ship-from-store is a recent trend in omni-channel retailing that allows retailers to use inventory from nearby stores to fulfill online orders, leading to faster delivery, lower shipment costs, higher in-stock probability, increased sales, and customer satisfaction. While this fulfillment model has many benefits, it also introduces operational challenges, including deciding from which location to fulfill online orders. This study investigates dynamic fulfillment decisions and proposes a heuristic policy to guide retailers in their cross-channel fulfillment decisions.

Optimal in-store fulfillment policies for online orders in an omni-channel retail environment

Rita Maria Difrancesco et al.

Summary: The explosive growth of e-commerce has created a need for increasingly responsive omni-channel fulfillment capabilities, posing new challenges for retailers in terms of inventory management and order fulfillment. This study analyzes the optimal setup of in-store fulfillment processes for online orders for an omni-channel retailer, using a simulation-based approach to determine optimal fulfillment policies under various sources of uncertainty. The research results provide insights into the optimal timing for batching orders, picking and delivery processes, as well as the optimal number of pickers and packers, with practical managerial implications for omni-channel operations.

Product quality and quantity with responsive pricing

Yugang Yu et al.

Summary: This paper studies a firm's optimal joint product quality and quantity decisions in the context of responsive pricing when consumers' utilities change with the market environment. The research finds that the optimal quantity increases as the reservation utility increases or the quality valuation decreases, but counterintuitively, the optimal quality decreases when the reservation utility becomes higher. Moreover, the product quality and quantity are substitutes in the context of responsive pricing.
