The effect of general and localized corrosions on the collapse pressure of subsea pipelines

Bai-Qiao Chen et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to estimate the collapse pressure of steel pipelines under random non-uniform general corrosion and localized corrosion. Non-linear, large deformation, and three-dimensional finite element analyses were used to assess the reduction in collapse pressure of offshore pipelines. The numerical approach was validated against experimental results, and various levels of corrosion deterioration were considered. The study found that the thickness reduction significantly affects the collapse strength, and different collapse modes are induced by different corrosion locations.

Summary: The study found that the M-E effect at corrosion defect on pipelines increases stress concentration and corrosion rate, reducing the failure pressure of the pipe. The effect is more pronounced when the pipe is suspended. The depth of the defect has a significant impact on stress and current density.

A review on defect assessment of pipelines: Principles, numerical solutions, and applications

Guojin Qin et al.

Summary: Research on defect assessment for pipelines has significantly advanced in the past decades, with the introduction of finite element analysis and multi-physics field coupling models. However, the use of Level 3 methods is limited by the requirement for strong academic background knowledge, and efforts should be made to develop a user-friendly platform for industry application in the future. Paying particular attention to defect assessment on pipeline welds is necessary for future work.

Summary: Ground movements in arctic regions from freezing and thawing can cause pipeline failures with factors like internal pressure, geometry, corrosion, and pre-existing dents speeding up the process. Various methods, including XFEM, are used to predict and study these failure processes, with XFEM being considered the most efficient for crack propagation. Research has shown that XFEM simulations align well with experiments, accurately predict crack propagation, and efficiently study the effects of parameters on pipeline crack propagation.
