A deep learning method for predicting microvoid growth in heterogeneous polycrystals

Jianqiu Liu et al.

Summary: This study creatively designed a novel microvoid growth model based on deep neural network, which combines convolutional and long short-term memory components, successfully capturing the statistical characteristic of microvoid growth in heterogeneous polycrystals. It is expected that this deep learning-based method can provide a new approach for predicting microvoid growth at the grain-level.

Summary: This study investigates the grain size effect in FCC polycrystalline plasticity using a multiscale modeling approach combining discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) and crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). The developed model quantitatively reproduces the deformation curves of FCC polycrystals and shows significant potential for further applications.

Effect of notch severity and crystallographic texture on local deformation and damage in commercially pure titanium

Vivek Kumar Sahu et al.

Summary: The local deformation and damage in commercially pure titanium were studied, and different anisotropic deformation and damage mechanisms were found for different initial textures and notch severity. The microstructural observations and strain measurements showed that crystallographic texture had a significant influence on slip activity, twin activity, and void growth.

Study of the interplay between lower-order and higher-order energetic strain-gradient effects in polycrystal plasticity

Paul G. Christodoulou et al.

Summary: This study combines lower-order and higher-order strain-gradient effects into a crystal plasticity FFT-based formulation to investigate the interplay between the length scale introduced by each strain-gradient term at the microscale and the mechanical properties at the macroscale. Results show that increasing the individual LO and HOE length scales affects the hardening rate and strength of the material, respectively. However, when combined, the strong LO hardening is less pronounced than the effect alone.

Role of crystallographic orientation on intragranular void growth in polycrystalline FCC materials

Paul G. Christodoulou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of crystallographic orientation and applied triaxiality on the growth of intragranular voids using two 3D micromechanics methods. The results show that loading type significantly influences void growth rate, and void growth is slower in polycrystals compared to single crystals. Furthermore, at the highest triaxiality tested, the correlation between crystal orientation and void growth rate in polycrystals strengthens.

Microvoid growth mechanism in FCC polycrystals and a statistical damage model

Jianqiu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the growth of microvoids in polycrystals under finite deformation was investigated, revealing significant influences of crystallographic orientation of grains and local heterogeneous polycrystalline microstructure on microvoid growth. Additionally, the size ratio of microvoid to voided grain was found to heavily influence microvoid growth, indicating a strong size effect in heterogeneous polycrystals.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

A crystal plasticity based finite element framework for RVE calculations of two-phase materials: Void nucleation in dual-phase steels

Tuncay Yalcinkaya et al.

Summary: A CPFE framework is developed to study the mechanical response and microstructure evolution of dual-phase steels, focusing on void nucleation. The effects of microstructural parameters on localized plastic deformation and void nucleation are investigated. The CPFE framework successfully predicts the mechanical response and different void nucleation mechanisms for DP steels.
