Sewage sludge, digestate, and mineral fertilizer application affects the yield and energy balance of Amur silvergrass

Bogdan Dubis et al.

Summary: The application of sewage sludge and digestate as fertilizers can increase biomass yields of Amur silvergrass while decreasing energy inputs in production. Digestate and sewage sludge show comparable effects to mineral fertilizers on biomass yield, with organic wastes resulting in a significant reduction in energy inputs. Nitrogen fertilization decreases energy efficiency, with digestate showing the highest energy efficiency compared to sewage sludge and mineral fertilizers.

Phytoextraction of heavy metals after application of bottom ash and municipal sewage sludge considering the risk of environmental pollution

Jacek Antonkiewicz et al.

Summary: Waste management is crucial for the conservation of natural resources and sustainable development. This study investigates the use of waste mixtures to reduce the toxicity threat of heavy metals in the environment and create favorable conditions for plant growth. The findings demonstrate that waste mixtures can effectively mitigate environmental risks and enhance waste utilization.

Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with nickel, cadmium and cobalt

Edyta Boros-Lajszner et al.

Summary: The pot experiment found that Elymus elongatus is suitable for Cd(2+) phytoextraction, while Elymus elongatus and Zea mays are suitable for phytostabilisation of Cd(2+) and Co(2+). Both plant species met the conditions for phytostabilisation, with limited transport of metals from the roots to the above-ground parts.

Root Characteristics and Metal Uptake of Maize (Zea mays L.) under Extreme Soil Contamination

Leila Romdhane et al.

Summary: In a pot trial using soil contaminated with Zn, Cu, Co, Cd, and Pb, root characteristics and metal uptake in the maize hybrid Naudi were studied. The pollution led to higher concentrations of metals in the shoot tissues, reduced fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, and changes in root diameter, tip density, and branching index. Maize showed sensitivity to multiple metal pollution, suggesting its potential use as a test plant for contaminated soils.

Can the Application of Municipal Sewage Sludge Compost in the Aided Phytostabilization Technique Provide an Effective Waste Management Method?

Maja Radziemska et al.

Summary: This study shows that municipal sewage sludge composts can support the phytostabilization of soils contaminated with high levels of heavy metals, and contribute to increased plant biomass and soil pH. The addition of MSSC significantly reduced the levels of Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soil after the experiment.
