Surface coating of zein nanoparticles to improve the application of bioactive compounds: A review

Yongkai Yuan et al.

Summary: The development of surface-coated zein nanoparticles has greatly enhanced their performance in delivering bioactive compounds, leading to broader applications in the food industry. Methods for surface coating include antisolvent precipitation, antisolvent co-precipitation, layer-by-layer, solvent evaporation, and pH-driven, with materials mainly proteins, polysaccharides, surfactants, and composites. Challenges in surface coating development lie in improving the application of zein carriers in commercial products and advancing laboratory-level researches.

Effect of implant formation on drug release kinetics of in situ forming implants

Min Sung Suh et al.

Summary: In situ forming implants offer control over drug release, simple manufacturing process, and minimally invasive administration. However, the mechanism of implant formation and microstructure changes are not fully understood, and there is a lack of standardized in vitro release testing methods due to limitations in recreating bio-relevant implant formation in vitro.

Effects of the micro/nanostructure of electrospun zein fibres on cells in simulated blood flow environment

Naian Shen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance endothelial cell adhesion by regulating the morphology of artificial blood vessel inner surfaces. Results showed that oriented electrospun zein fibre surfaces can significantly improve the adhesion of endothelial cells, particularly when the medium-diameter fibres were aligned with the flow direction. This suggests that controlling cell morphology and shear stress resistance can be achieved by changing the diameter and arrangement of electrospun fibres.

Construction of 3D printed reduced-fat meat analogue by emulsion gels. Part I: Flow behavior, thixotropic feature, and network structure of soy protein-based inks

Mahdiyar Shahbazi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of reduced-fat emulsion gels using hydrophobically modified biosurfactants, which exhibited pseudoplastic behavior and good storage stability. Inks with higher ratios of biosurfactants showed better droplet dispersion and higher structural strength. The differences in flow behavior and emulsion stability were attributed to the molecular weight and radius of gyration of the biosurfactants.

An in vitro gel-based system for characterizing and predicting the long-term performance of PLGA in situ forming implants

Zhuoxuan Li et al.

Summary: A gel-based release testing system was developed to characterize the long-term in vitro behavior of in situ forming implants. This system discriminated between formulations containing different co-solvents and was able to predict real-time release. UV imaging in the gel-based system allowed for monitoring the micro-environmental pH changes of the implants, providing detailed evaluation and prediction of the in vitro performance of long-acting injectables.
