Replacing corn with full-fat corn germ in a basal diet containing cactus (Opuntia stricta) cladodes and sugarcane as forage sources induces milk fat depression associated with the trans-10 shift in dairy cows

A. J. Netto et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that combining cactus with plant oils can increase the nutritional value of milk fat. This study investigated the effects of using full-fat corn germ (FFCG) as an alternative to plant oils on production variables, blood metabolites, and milk fatty acid composition in dairy cows. The results showed that FFCG can be an effective source of PUFA for cows fed cactus, but it also resulted in milk fat depression.

Effects of Pistacia atlantica gum essential oil on ruminal methanogen, protozoa, selected bacteria species and fermentation characteristics in

Veria Naseri et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of Pistacia atlantica subspecies Kurdica gum essential oil (PAKEO) on ruminal microbial population and fermentation in sheep. The results showed that PAKEO supplementation increased the abundance of total bacteria and Ruminococcus flavefaciens, decreased Fibrobacter succinogenes abundance, and dramatically decreased the population of methanogens. This suggests that PAKEO has the potential to improve ruminal fermentation.

Sustainable Use of Apple Pomace (AP) in Different Industrial Sectors

Ewelina Golebiewska et al.

Summary: Apple pomace is a common type of agri-food waste that can cause pollution and health hazards if not properly managed. However, through sustainable development, apple pomace can be successfully reused as a source of energy and bio-materials, and its active compounds have various applications. Given the increasing mass of produced apple pomace, its commercial applications could have a huge economic impact in the future.

Polyphenols in Ruminant Nutrition and Their Effects on Reproduction

Drago Beslo et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the knowledge regarding the potential positive and negative effects of polyphenols in the diets of domestic animals and their bioavailability. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties and can improve the quality of animal gametes, positively affecting reproduction. However, the intake of phytoestrogens that mimic estrogen function may induce pathological conditions in the female reproductive tract.

The effect of ensiled paulownia leaves in a high-forage diet on ruminal fermentation, methane production, fatty acid composition, and milk production performance of dairy cows

Haihao Huang et al.

Summary: The use of paulownia leaves silage (PLS) as a feed can reduce methane emission and improve milk quality in dairy cows. PLS affects ruminal fermentation, microbial populations, and fatty acid proportions in ruminal fluid and milk.

Summary: The study found that feeding heat-treated or fat-coated SBM did not increase milk production in high-yielding cows, but the use of fat-coated SBM did increase milk fat yield. Both palmitic acid coating and heat treatment improved total tract digestibility.

Effects of plant extract supplementations or monensin on nutrient intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation and metabolism in dairy cows

S. N. S. e Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of diet supplementation with monensin and saponins alone or combined with essential oils on nutrient intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation, microbial populations, nitrogen balance, ruminal microbial protein synthesis, blood metabolites, and milk composition, yield, and fatty acid profile of mid- to late-lactating Jersey cows. The results showed that the different supplements had varying impacts on the cows' dry matter intake, ruminal pH, microbial populations, energy intake, blood metabolites, and milk fatty acid composition.

A critical review on the development stage of biorefinery systems towards the management of apple processing-derived waste

Mukesh Kumar Awasthi et al.

Summary: Apple processing waste, such as apple pomace, is currently underutilized and mainly disposed of in landfills or informally. Research efforts have focused on incorporating apple pomace into feed and food systems, as well as developing eco-friendly techniques for extraction of pectin and phenolics. However, more research is needed for the recovery of value added products from apple pomace, with an integrated approach including techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment likely to reveal promising valorization routes.
