Respiratory syncytial virus prevention within reach: the vaccine and monoclonal antibody landscape

Natalie Mazur et al.

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of infant mortality and morbidity in older adults. Efforts are being made to develop RSV vaccines and immunoprophylaxis using various approaches, with 33 candidates currently in clinical development. Understanding antibody targets has led to more rational and structure-based vaccine design. An extended half-life monoclonal antibody for infants is expected to receive regulatory approval within a year. Other approaches include live-attenuated vaccines for older infants, subunit vaccines for pregnant women, and vector and nucleic acid vaccines for older adults. Ensuring access and affordability of RSV vaccines globally is a priority.

World Health Organization Influenza-Like Illness Underestimates the Burden of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Koos Korsten et al.

Summary: The accuracy of the influenza-like illness (ILI) case definition from the World Health Organization (WHO) in identifying acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in older adults is uncertain. The ILI definition, which includes fever, underestimates the occurrence of RSV-ARTI. There is a need for a better approach to measure RSV disease occurrence and the impact of future RSV vaccine introduction.

Economic Burden and Health-Related Quality of Life of Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Influenza Infection in European Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Zhuxin Mao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the average costs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older adults with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza infection. The results showed that the direct costs per nonhospitalized RSV episode were estimated to be 26.4 euros, with indirect costs of 4.4 euros. For nonhospitalized influenza episodes, the direct costs were estimated to be 42.5 euros, with indirect costs of 32.1 euros. The study also found a decrease in HRQoL during RSV and influenza infections.

Global, regional, and national disease burden estimates of acute lower respiratory infections due to respiratory syncytial virus in children younger than 5 years in 2019: a systematic analysis

You Li et al.

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) plays a significant role in morbidity and mortality burden globally in children aged 0-60 months, especially during the first 6 months of life and in low-income and middle-income countries. Passive immunization programs targeting RSV could have a substantial effect on reducing disease burden.

Viral respiratory infections and air pollutants

Maria Camila Loaiza-Ceballos et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a global public health issue and a risk factor for cardiorespiratory diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can induce inflammatory responses and increase the risk of respiratory viral infections. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and guide decisions for controlling respiratory infections.

Summary: This study examines the economic costs of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among infants and young children in the United States. The findings suggest that public sources bear the majority of the medical costs associated with infants' RSV treatment, and full-term infants account for the majority of RSV hospitalizations and costs.

Severity of RSV infection in Southern European elderly patients during two consecutive winter seasons (2017-2018)

Summary: This study aimed to assess the severity of RSV infection in elderly individuals in Southern Europe, finding a certain level of risk for pneumonia, NIV use, and in-hospital death among this group. Factors such as chronic kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnea or obesity hypoventilation syndrome, male gender, and solid neoplasm were identified as potential risk factors for increased severity of RSV infection.

Clinical Epidemiological Characteristics and Risk Factors for Severe Bronchiolitis Caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Vietnamese Children

Summary: This study conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study at Haiphong Children's Hospital in Vietnam for one year, identifying risk factors of severe acute bronchiolitis caused by RSV. The study found an upward trend of hospitalized infants with bronchiolitis during the winter-spring season, with factors such as respiratory distress, age (≤6 months), low birth weight, preterm birth, early weaning, and exposure to cigarette smoke increasing the risk of severe disease.

Air Pollutants' Concentrations Are Associated with Increased Number of RSV Hospitalizations in Polish Children

August Wrotek et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Poland from 2010 to 2019 found significant seasonal and annual periodicity in pediatric RSV hospitalizations, with increased concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 being positively associated with higher RSV hospitalization numbers. The inclusion of these air pollutants in regression models explained a significant portion of the variance in RSV hospitalizations, with interaction effects observed between pollutants as well as with the study year. Efforts to reduce air pollution may help decrease the burden of hospital healthcare costs related to RSV.
