A potential objective marker in first-episode schizophrenia based on abnormal niacin response

YeGang Hu et al.

Summary: The lack of objective diagnostic markers in the clinical management of schizophrenia has been a challenge. A study found that the modified bivariate cut-offs method using niacin skin flush abnormality (NFA) could potentially serve as an objective marker for early diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia.

Circulating IGFBP-2 levels reveal atherogenic metabolic risk in schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotics

Marc-Andre Nolin et al.

Summary: The study found that IGFBP-2 levels were negatively correlated with waist circumference, insulin sensitivity, and plasma triglycerides in male schizophrenia patients treated with olanzapine or risperidone. Lower IGFBP-2 levels below 220 ng/mL were associated with a higher proportion of men with a hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype compared to those with levels above this threshold.

Effect of risperidone treatment on insulin-like growth factor-1 and interleukin-17 in drug na?ve first-episode schizophrenia

Dachun Chen et al.

Summary: This study showed that serum levels of IL-17 and IGF-1 in schizophrenia patients were significantly higher than in normal individuals, with IGF-1 levels decreasing after treatment while IL-17 levels remained stable. Furthermore, the baseline IGF-1 levels were negatively associated with improvements in negative symptoms of schizophrenia, suggesting a potential role of IGF-1 in the pathophysiology of negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

Summary: This study found no significant difference in serum IGF-1 levels between patients with chronic schizophrenia and healthy controls. Serum IGF-1 levels were significantly negatively correlated with PANSS total and general scores, and were associated with patient age.

Evaluation of IGF-1 as a novel theranostic biomarker for schizophrenia

Summary: The study found that fasting blood glucose levels were higher in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls, and LDL levels were higher in treatment sensitive patients than in treatment resistant patients but not significantly different from healthy controls. IGF-1 levels were significantly associated with treatment resistance and age of disease onset.

Summary: Dopamine and its receptors modulate functions in the central nervous system and immune system, playing a role in maintaining homeostasis. Abnormalities in dopamine receptor expression in lymphocytes of schizophrenia patients may contribute to the severity of the illness.
