Pollen-specific gene SKU5-SIMILAR 13 enhances growth of pollen tubes in the transmitting tract in Arabidopsis

Ming Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: The gene SKU5-SIMILAR 13 plays a critical role in pollen tube growth in the transmitting tract of Arabidopsis thaliana by mediating the biosynthesis of jasmonic acid and modifying cell wall components. Mutations in the SKS13 gene lead to altered cell wall components and retarded growth of pollen tubes, affecting male fertility during the pollen transfer process. Our results suggest that SKS13 is essential for pollen tube growth in the transmitting tract through the regulation of jasmonic acid biosynthesis.

Integrative transcriptomic and metabolomic alterations unravel the effect of melatonin on mitigating postharvest chilling injury upon plum (cv. Friar) fruit

Ranran Xu et al.

Summary: The research suggests that melatonin treatment can alleviate cold-induced damage in plum fruit during storage, including reducing flesh reddening and ethylene burst, suppressing fruit softening, and maintaining energy status. Furthermore, melatonin treatment effectively inhibits the stimulation of key phenolic compounds in plum fruit by cold stress.

Multilayered synergistic regulation of phytoalexin biosynthesis by ethylene, jasmonate, and MAPK signaling pathways in Arabidopsis

Jinggeng Zhou et al.

Summary: Ethylene, jasmonate, and MPK3/MPK6 signaling pathways synergistically induce camalexin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis. The transcription factor ERF1 integrates the ethylene and jasmonate pathways to upregulate camalexin biosynthetic genes and interacts with WRKY33 to cooperate in activating camalexin biosynthesis. Additionally, ERF1 acts as a substrate of MPK3/MPK6 and its phosphorylation enhances its transactivation activity.

Effect of benzothiadiazole treatment on quality and anthocyanin biosynthesis in plum fruit during storage at ambient temperature

Chen Huan et al.

Summary: The study showed that the BTH treatment accelerated fruit ripening, improved fruit quality, and increased anthocyanin biosynthesis in 'Taoxingli' plums. This treatment could be a potential postharvest technology for enhancing fruit quality and consumer acceptability in harvested plum fruit.

Summary: Plum is a rich source of phenolic compounds, with differences in composition between free and bound phenolics. Following simulated gastrointestinal digestion, certain phenolic compounds in plum were found to have higher bioaccessibility, which correlated positively with the antioxidant capacity of plum.

Paving the Way for Fertilization: The Role of the Transmitting Tract

Ana Marta Pereira et al.

Summary: Angiosperm reproduction depends on the precise growth of the pollen tube through different pistil tissues to achieve double fertilization. A network of communication and signaling cascades mediates interactions between the pollen tube and female tissues, with the transmitting tract tissue playing a vital role in supporting pollen tube growth. Insights into these processes are limited due to difficulties in accessing and manipulating female sporophytic tissues in the pistil.

Seed weight mediates effects of pollen on berry weight, ripening, and anthocyanin content in highbush blueberry

Kenichi Doi et al.

Summary: Blueberry growth varies among individual berries, even within the same flower cluster on the same tree. Cross-pollination with different pollen sources and self-pollination were used to induce variations in the number of seeds per berry. The effects of pollen on fruit characteristics such as berry weight, days to ripen, and anthocyanin content were analyzed, with differences observed in seed number and weight based on the pollen source.

Pollen Paternity Can Affect Kernel Size and Nutritional Composition of Self-Incompatible and New Self-Compatible Almond Cultivars

Wiebke Kamper et al.

Summary: Breeding programs for horticultural tree crops mainly focus on improving productivity, pest and disease resistance, and crop quality. Pollination by different parents can affect almond kernel size and nutritional quality. Self-compatible cultivars may have a high percentage of kernels resulting from self-pollination, while different cross-pollen parents do not greatly impact kernel size or quality.

Transcriptome analysis of starch and sucrose metabolism change in Gold Queen Hami melons under different storage temperatures

Qin Zhang et al.

Summary: Temperature control is a key factor in maintaining postharvest fruit quality and extending shelf life. The study found that storage temperature significantly influenced gene expression in Gold Queen Hami melon fruit, particularly genes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism pathways. Lower temperatures, such as 3 degrees C and 0.5 degrees C, were associated with increased sweetness loss and promoted starch degradation in the melons.

Pomological Characteristics and Ploidy Levels of Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) Cultivars Preserved in Poland

Agnieszka Glowacka et al.

Summary: Research was conducted on 36 Japanese plum cultivars at an Experimental Orchard in Dabrowice near Skierniewice from 2015 to 2020, focusing on various aspects including frost resistance, susceptibility to sharka, flowering biology, fruit setting, yield, and ploidy levels. The findings revealed that some cultivars were susceptible to frost and sharka disease, while others performed well in the climate of Central Europe.

The role of auxin during early berry development in grapevine as revealed by transcript profiling from pollination to fruit set

Francisca Godoy et al.

Summary: This study revealed the morphological, reproductive, and molecular events from anthesis to fruit set in grapevine. RNA-seq analysis showed that the highest percentage of induced/repressed genes within the hormone-related category were auxin-related genes. Transcript profiling indicated significant transcriptional variations in auxin signaling and homeostasis-related genes during early fruit development.
