Metabolomics: a systems biology approach for enhancing heat stress tolerance in plants

Ali Raza

Summary: Comprehensive metabolomic investigations have provided valuable insights into improving the heat stress tolerance of crops. Metabolomics-assisted breeding, along with transcriptomics, has enhanced our understanding of stress-related metabolites and metabolic pathways. The integration of metabolomics and post-genomic platforms allows for a deeper understanding of the biochemical configuration of plants and its connection to genetic and environmental cues.

'Omics' approaches in developing combined drought and heat tolerance in food crops

Anjali Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: Global climate change will increase the intensity and frequency of hot, dry days, affecting various agronomic characteristics of crops. Plants will experience disruptions in physiological traits and metabolic processes, but have adaptive defense strategies in response to combined drought/heat stress. Understanding plant responses and tolerance mechanisms is crucial for developing stress-resilient crops, with genetic engineering and molecular breeding showing potential in this direction.

The wheat dioxygenase BX6 is involved in the formation of benzoxazinoids in planta and contributes to plant defense against insect herbivores

Reut Shavit et al.

Summary: Benzoxazinoids are important plant metabolites with defense properties, and our study focuses on the characterization of BX6 genes in different wheat genotypes and their effects on defense against herbivores. The results show that wheat BX6 is involved in benzoxazinoid formation in plants and contributes to plant resistance against insect herbivores.

Biochemically Triggered Heat and Drought Stress Tolerance in Rice by Proline Application

Sajid Hanif et al.

Summary: Abiotic stresses, particularly heat and drought, significantly reduce rice yield. Proline, a multifunctional amino acid, can alleviate these stresses by improving antioxidant activities and chlorophyll content. Foliar application of proline enhances the activity of enzymes and proteins, leading to improved plant yield under stress conditions.

Metabolomics-driven gene mining and genetic improvement of tolerance to salt-induced osmotic stress in maize

Xiaoyan Liang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that natural maize varieties display a large diversity of salt tolerance, yet the genetic variants underlying such diversity remain poorly discovered and applied. An LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics approach identified 37 metabolite biomarkers related to SIOS tolerance, and 10 candidate genes significantly associated with SIOS tolerance and METO abundances. A citrate synthase, a glucosyltransferase, and a cytochrome P450 were validated to underlie genotype-METO-SIOS tolerance associations and improve the SIOS tolerance of elite maize inbred lines through additive effects.

Alterations in the leaf lipidome of Brassica carinata under high-temperature stress

Zolian Zoong Lwe et al.

Summary: This study investigated lipid remodeling in Brassica carinata in response to high-temperature stress, revealing that high-temperature treatments significantly affected growth and development, leading to alterations in leaf lipid composition primarily characterized by a decrease in membrane lipid unsaturation. This decline in unsaturation levels appears to be an acclimation mechanism to maintain optimal membrane fluidity under high-temperature conditions.

Metabolome-Based Genome-Wide Association Study Provides Genetic Insights Into the Natural Variation of Foxtail Millet

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The plant metabolome serves as a bridge between the genome and the phenome, impacting the interaction between plant growth and the environment. By using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a wide range metabolomics analysis of 150 millet germplasm was conducted, revealing significant natural variations in primary and secondary metabolites in millets from India and different regions of China. The study also identified specific genetic loci associated with metabolites, providing insights for future research on complex physiological traits in millet using mGWAS analysis.
