'Loss of efficacy of topical 5% permethrin for treating scabies: an Austrian single-center study'

Damian Meyersburg et al.

Summary: Scabies is a contagious and itchy parasitic infection of the skin, and the standard treatment of choice, topical permethrin cream, is becoming less effective. This study found mite populations with reduced susceptibility to permethrin in Austria, highlighting the need for alternative treatment regimens.

Scabies-clinical resistance to permethrin therapy Case reports and a critical discussion of current treatment recommendations

Renz Mang et al.

Summary: Scabies is a contagious disease with increasing frequency, and there is controversy in the scientific literature regarding whether the mite has become resistant to standard therapy. Case reports and studies have shown decreased effectiveness of permethrin therapy, with dermatoscopy being a useful tool in diagnosis and evaluating treatment efficacy.

In vitro experiments of Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) resistance to permethrin and 6-paradol in East Jakarta: Detoxification enzyme activity and electron microscopic changes in lice

Rizal Subahar et al.

Summary: The study found that both permethrin and 6-paradol have low toxicity against head lice, but 6-paradol has a significantly higher mortality rate compared to permethrin. Both substances significantly increased the activity of acetylcholinesterase, glutathione S-transferase, and oxidase. Additionally, 6-paradol caused severe microstructural damage to the dead lice.

Eleven Danish patients diagnosed with Scabies and treated with Tenutex(R)

Christian A. S. Soerensen et al.

Summary: In patients diagnosed with scabies, treatment with Tenutex(R) may be considered if initial treatment with 5% permethrin fails. Failure with 5% permethrin could be attributed to tolerance or resistance in scabies mites.
