Triterpenoids as Reactive Oxygen Species Modulators of Cell Fate

Taotao Ling et al.

Summary: Triterpenoid natural products play a crucial role in understanding mechanistic models of human diseases. They function as reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulators to regulate cell survival and function. These secondary metabolites induce various cell death modalities through ROS, affecting complex cell signaling pathways.

Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in cutaneous melanoma

Prakrit R. Kumar et al.

Summary: The Warburg effect in tumor cells is characterized by increased glycolysis, but recent studies have highlighted the importance of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and glycolysis in malignant cells, particularly in melanoma where metabolic plasticity and symbiosis exist between glycolysis and OXPHOS. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in the tumor microenvironment form a symbiotic relationship with melanoma cells, promoting progression and chemoresistance. Targeting mitochondrial trafficking may be a potential novel therapeutic approach for refractory melanoma.

Novel Synthesized N-Ethyl-Piperazinyl-Amides of C2-Substituted Oleanonic and Ursonic Acids Exhibit Cytotoxic Effects through Apoptotic Cell Death Regulation

Oxana Kazakova et al.

Summary: A series of novel chalcone derivatives of oleanonic and ursonic acids were synthesized and evaluated for their cytotoxic potential against cancer cell lines. Compounds 4 and 6 showed high anticancer activity by inducing apoptosis. Molecular docking analysis indicated that these compounds may induce apoptotic cell death by inhibiting Bcl-XL protein.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
