Addition of Medicinal Plants Increases Antioxidant Activity, Color, and Anthocyanin Stability of Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) Functional Beverages

Desislava Teneva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of adding medicinal plants on the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and color intensity of ready-to-drink aronia nectar. The study found that pasteurization caused a decrease in anthocyanin content, but the addition of medicinal plants slowed down the degradation of anthocyanins. Additionally, the plants enriched the nectar with phenolic compounds, increased antioxidant activity, and enhanced color intensity through co-pigmentation.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) inhibitors: Current research and prospective

Yongsheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This review discusses TLR4 inhibitors that can bind directly to TLR4 or the TLR4/MD2 complex, as well as compounds that can downregulate the expression of TLR4. The involvement of specific residues in the binding of antagonistic ligands to the TLR4/MD2 complex provides useful information for structure-based TLR4 inhibitor design.

Prebiotic properties, antioxidant activity, and acute oral toxicity of xylooligosaccharides derived enzymatically from corncob

Pinpanit Boonchuay et al.

Summary: The study showed that corncob xylooligosaccharides are a good prebiotic that can promote the growth of probiotic lactic acid bacteria and have excellent radical scavenging activities and antioxidant power. Acute oral toxicity tests revealed that corncob-XOS at a dose of 5000 mg/kg bw showed no toxic effects, indicating it could be further applied as functional foods.

Production of xylo-oligosaccharides from wheat straw using microwave assisted deep eutectic solvent pretreatment

Asli Isci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of microwave assisted deep eutectic solvent pretreatment on the solubilization of xylan and release of xylo-oligosaccharides from wheat straw. It was found that the increase in microwave energy led to linear decrease in xylan yield in the solid fraction, while the xylose monomer and oligosaccharide yields in the liquid fraction initially increased and then declined. Addition of water in deep eutectic solvent resulted in approximately 68% reduction in furfural yield.
