The effect of electrospun scaffolds on the glycosaminoglycan profile of differentiating neural stem cells

Fabio F. F. Garrudo et al.

Summary: The use of electrospun scaffolds for neural tissue engineering applications allows closer mimicry of the native tissue extracellular matrix (ECM), important for cell transplantation in vivo. The differentiation of REN-VM cells on polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers and glass lamellas showed similar outcomes in neural cell differentiation. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed changes in GAG production in cell cultures and media samples, indicating the creation of complex structures associated with perineural networks.

Measuring collagen fibril diameter with differential interference contrast microscopy

Seyed Mohammad Siadat et al.

Summary: Using a combination of DIC microscopy and electron microscopy, researchers established a linear relationship between collagen diameter and DIC edge intensity shift (DIC-EIS). This simple, nondestructive, label-free method allows for accurate measurement of fibril diameter, providing a new tool for studying collagen dynamics.
