Appraisal of Donation After Circulatory Death: How Far Could We Expand the Heart Donor Pool?

Alejandro Suarez-Pierre et al.

Summary: The wide adoption of donation after circulatory death (DCD) heart transplantation could lead to a substantial increase in the donor pool size, with approximately 580 additional organs becoming available each year across the United States. This would represent the largest increase in the donor pool in the modern era of heart transplantation.

An Overview of the Molecular Mechanisms Associated with Myocardial Ischemic Injury: State of the Art and Translational Perspectives

Leonardo Schirone et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in western countries, with myocardial infarction representing a life-threatening condition that leads to heart failure. Efforts have been made to study the molecular mechanisms of ischemia/reperfusion injury and cardiac remodeling. This review article discusses the latest evidence on the molecular basis of myocardial ischemic injury and potential therapeutic interventions for cardioprotection and cardiac remodeling attenuation.
