Sugar conundrum in plant-pathogen interactions: roles of invertase and sugar transporters depend on pathosystems

Yong-Hua Liu et al.

Summary: Analyses of plant species and pathogens show that specific roles of invertases and sugar transporters in plant-pathogen interactions depend on the lifestyle and infection strategies of pathogens. Cell wall invertase (CWIN), sugar transport proteins (STP), and sugar will eventually be exported transporters (SWEET) play important roles in plant-pathogen interactions. However, there are contradictory findings and conclusions in the literature. Further studies on microbial sugar metabolism and transport in plant-pathogen interactions are needed.

Plant susceptible responses: the underestimated side of plant-pathogen interactions

Vladimir Gorshkov et al.

Summary: Susceptibility in plants does not mean passivity, as active cooperation from the host may be required for pathogen propagation. Induced susceptibility, though often overlooked in literature, has a significant impact on plant-pathogen interactions and disease progression. This review aims to highlight the importance of understanding plant susceptible responses for agricultural practice.

Trehalose increases tomato drought tolerance, induces defenses, and increases resistance to bacterial wilt disease

April M. MacIntyre et al.

Summary: Water stress and bacterial wilt disease both lead to accumulation of trehalose in tomato plants, which enhances drought and disease resistance through hormone regulation and defense gene expression.

Shining a light on NAD- and NADP-based metabolism in plants

Edward N. Smith et al.

Summary: Pyridine nucleotides play crucial roles in plant biology, acting as both energy transducers and redox couples, essential for processes like photosynthesis and immunity. Genetically encoded fluorescent biosensors offer new insights but their limitations must be considered for accurate interpretation. Further development of these tools could address pressing questions in plant biology.

PTI-ETI crosstalk: an integrative view of plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: Plants have innate immune responses to resist pathogen attacks, involving pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs) that lead to pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI). Despite different activation mechanisms, PTI and ETI converge into similar downstream responses, with evidence of interactions and shared components between PRR-mediated and NLR-mediated signaling cascades. Future research on signal collaboration between PRR-initiated and NLR-initiated immunity will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the plant immune system.

Unravelling Plant Responses to Stress-The Importance of Targeted and Untargeted Metabolomics

James William Allwood et al.

Summary: Climate change and a growing population pose challenges to environmentally sustainable nutritious food production. Enhancements in crop yield through breeding are decreasing, while agricultural intensification is hindered by pests, pathogens, and abiotic stress pressures. Metabolomics approaches have contributed to understanding plant stress responses, but face challenges due to the complex nature of metabolites and biological systems.
