Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Older People is Associated with Reduced Pharyngeal Sensitivity and Low Substance P and CGRP Concentration in Saliva

Noemi Tomsen et al.

Summary: Elderly patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) exhibit lower concentrations of substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in their saliva, reduced pharyngeal sensory threshold, as well as decreased intracellular water and saliva volume. These patients also show impaired pharyngeal sensitivity, indicating potential use of salivary SP levels as a biomarker to monitor pharyngeal sensitivity in this population.

A bit thick: Hidden risks in thickening products' labelling for dysphagia treatment

M. Bolivar-Prados et al.

Summary: This study compared the label information of TPs with different thickening agents and found that using the same descriptors for very different viscosities on labels is a problem. The research demonstrated that shear rate and alpha-SA strongly affect viscosity, but this information is often not described on the labels.

Effects of pharmacological agents for neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ivy Cheng et al.

Summary: Based on the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), this systematic review and meta-analysis found that transient receptor potential (TRP) channel agonists, Nifedipine, and Metoclopramide may be beneficial for patients with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia. Further large-scale, multicenter clinical trials are needed to fully explore the therapeutic effects of these drugs on swallowing.
