Polymicrobial communities in periodontal disease: Their quasi-organismal nature and dialogue with the host

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: In health, indigenous polymicrobial communities at mucosal surfaces maintain an ecological balance via interactions that promote their own and the host's fitness. However, destabilizing factors may disrupt this balance, leading to dysbiosis and periodontitis. Dysbiotic community is a quasi-organismal entity with constituent organisms communicating and displaying functional specialization.

The Active Subunit of the Cytolethal Distending Toxin, CdtB, Derived From Both Haemophilus ducreyi and Campylobacter jejuni Exhibits Potent Phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-Triphosphate Phosphatase Activity

Grace Huang et al.

Summary: The CdtB subunits from Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Haemophilus ducreyi, and Campylobacter jejuni exhibit potent PIP3 phosphatase activity, leading to PI-3K signaling blockade in treated cells. This blockade is essential for Cdts-induced toxicity in lymphocytes, which can be reversed by GSK3 beta inhibitors. Furthermore, Cdts from HdCdt and CjCdt, like AaCdt, rely on host cell protein cellugyrin for their toxicity.
