Butyrate promotes oral squamous cell carcinoma cells migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition

Wenli Zang et al.

Summary: This study found that butyrate can promote the migration and invasion of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells by inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), indicating that butyrate may contribute to the metastasis of OSCC.

Butyrate Prevents Induction of CXCL10 and Non-Canonical IRF9 Expression by Activated Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells via HDAC Inhibition

Sandra G. P. J. Korsten et al.

Summary: Butyrate is the most effective in inhibiting CXCL10 release compared to other SCFAs, mainly through HDAC inhibition. Butyrate does not affect phosphorylated STAT1 and NF kappa B p65, but inhibits IRF9 and phosphorylated JAK2 protein expression in activated cells.

Nrf2 Activation and NF-Kb & caspase/bax signaling inhibition by sodium butyrate alleviates LPS-induced cell injury in bovine mammary epithelial cells

Ilyas Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the protective effect of sodium butyrate (SB) on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mastitis model in vitro. SB shows a concentration-dependent protective effect against LPS-induced death of bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs). It reduces oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis by inhibiting NF-kB and caspase/Bax signaling pathways. The protective effect of SB is associated with the activation of the endogenous antioxidant system (Nrf2, Keap1, NQO-1, and HO-1). These findings suggest that SB could be a potential therapeutic agent for bovine mastitis.

A double-edged sword: Role of butyrate in the oral cavity and the gut

Xiaoyuan Guan et al.

Summary: Butyrate, a metabolite of anaerobic bacteria, plays crucial roles in the gut and oral cavity, influencing various diseases such as periodontitis. Despite its diverse functions in different organs, the impact of butyrate on different diseases provides valuable insights for further research.

Long-term exposure to butyric acid induces excessive production of matrix metalloproteases in human gingival fibroblasts

Maki Nakagawa et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that butyric acid reduces the viability of gingival fibroblasts and promotes overproduction of MMPs, disrupting the balance between MMPs and TIMPs. This imbalance could potentially lead to tissue destruction in periodontal disease.

IL-33 Is Involved in the Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Butyrate and Propionate on TNFα-Activated Endothelial Cells

Meng Li et al.

Summary: The inhibitory effects of butyrate and propionate on TNF alpha-induced IL-8 production were mediated by the HDACs/IL-33/NF-kappa B pathway, while their effects on VCAM-1 expression might be associated with the HDACs/MAPK signaling pathway, independently of IL-33.

Oral Osteomicrobiology: The Role of Oral Microbiota in Alveolar Bone Homeostasis

Xingqun Cheng et al.

Summary: Osteomicrobiology is a new research field that aims to explore the role of microbiota in bone homeostasis, particularly focusing on the alveolar bone. Recent studies have shown the significant impact of oral microbiota on host defense systems and alveolar bone homeostasis. Advances in technology are rapidly advancing the mechanistic understanding of how oral microbiota mediate alveolar bone remodeling processes.

Gut Microbiota May Mediate the Influence of Periodontitis on Prediabetes

L. Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a potential link between periodontitis and diabetes mediated by gut microbiota. Depletion of gut microbiota with antibiotics improved diabetes-related markers in periodontitis mice. This suggests a role of gut microbiota in influencing the impact of periodontitis on prediabetes.

Dietary Derived Propionate Regulates Pathogenic Fibroblast Function and Ameliorates Experimental Arthritis and Inflammatory Tissue Priming

Jasna Friscic et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids play important roles in regulating adaptive immune responses, and their influence on inflammation driven by innate immunity is not well studied. This study found that propionate treatment can reduce experimental arthritis and decrease inflammatory tissue damage by interfering with the production and migration of inflammatory mediators in synovial fibroblasts. The alleviating effect of propionate on arthritis may be attributed to the direct abrogation of local arthritogenic fibroblast function.

Reactive oxygen species-dependent release of damage-associated molecular patterns from human gingival epithelial Ca9-22 cells during butyrate or propionate exposure

Yui Fujiwara et al.

Summary: Treatment with butyrate and propionate induces dose and time-dependent cell death in gingival epithelial Ca9-22 cells, accompanied by the release of DAMPs. The use of ROS scavengers, such as ascorbic acid and N-acetylcysteine, reduces cellular death and inhibits DAMP release induced by SCFAs. These findings suggest that SCFA-induced cell death and DAMP release are dependent on ROS.
