Dendritic autophagy degrades postsynaptic proteins and is required for long-term synaptic depression in mice

Emmanouela Kallergi et al.

Summary: Autophagy is required for pruning dendritic spines and long-term depression (LTD), a major form of synaptic plasticity. LTD induces the biogenesis of autophagic vesicles in dendrites to facilitate the degradation of postsynaptic proteins. Autophagy plays a crucial role in dendritic spine pruning and synaptic plasticity.

Autophagy coupled to translation is required for long-term memory

Kiran Pandey et al.

Summary: An increase in autophagy following learning is essential for long-term memory formation, but not necessary for the increase in protein synthesis. The upregulation of autophagy proteins is due to active translation of their mRNA rather than changes in total mRNA levels.

Astrocytes as Perspective Targets of Exercise- and Caloric Restriction-Mimetics

Ulyana Lalo et al.

Summary: Enhanced mental and physical activity can have positive effects on aging brain function, with potential involvement of changes in interactions between astrocytes and neurons in the pre-clinical stages of neurodegenerative diseases. Astrocytes play a crucial role in mediating the positive influence of physical activity and diet on neuronal function, and there is a need to develop therapeutic agents improving astroglia-neuron communications in aging brain. Recent studies suggest that astrocyte-neuron communications are vital for the beneficial effects of caloric restriction, physical exercise, and their pharmacological mimetics on synaptic homeostasis and cognitive function.
