Isotropic design and mechanical characterization of TPMS-based hollow cellular structures

Junjian Fu et al.

Summary: This paper presents an isotropic design method for TPMS-based cellular structures, which are optimized using Boolean operations and genetic algorithms to achieve isotropic hollow structures with superior mechanical properties. Compared to solid counterparts, the optimized isotropic hollow cellular structures exhibit higher Young's modulus, bulk modulus, as well as better load-bearing and energy absorption properties in static and dynamic compression scenarios.

Enhancement in the mechanical behaviour of a Schwarz Primitive periodic minimal surface lattice structure design

Xiao Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved Schwarz primitive lattice structure was proposed by redefining the original opening diameter with a shape parameter. Experimental results showed that the modified P lattice structure with a small opening diameter had increased Young's modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption compared to the original P lattice structure.

Summary: This article introduces a mechanical metamaterial based on surface-based sheet lattice, and proposes a design method of shell offset to enhance mechanical properties and domain controllability. The experimental results show that increasing the shell offset can effectively improve the mechanical properties and energy absorption of the sheet lattice, and a feasible adjustment region has been found to control the spatial volume fraction of the void phases for heat exchange regulation.

Mechanical properties of a new type of plate-lattice structures

Yabo Liu

Summary: The study found that the Young's modulus of the plate-lattice structure was twice that of the lattice composed of trusses, and the stiffness of the plate-lattice structure was more likely to reach the Hashin-Shtrikman theoretical upper bounds. Compared to truss lattice structures, plate-lattice structures exhibited 2-3 times higher stiffness values.

Topology-optimized hybrid solid-lattice structures for efficient mechanical performance

Mohsen Teimouri et al.

Summary: In this study, new hybrid solid-lattice structures were developed by combining strut-based lattice wireframes with topology optimized solid structures. Mechanical performance analyses showed that the novel structures outperformed classic solid structures and lattice wireframes in terms of stiffness, buckling failure load, and energy absorption, while the effect of different unit cells was also examined. Additionally, despite a considerable increase in structural mass in the hybrid structures, the fundamental frequency was only slightly reduced in frequency analysis.

A topology strategy to reduce stress shielding of additively manufactured porous metallic biomaterials

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: A topology strategy of designing double-cone struts was proposed to reduce stress shielding of diamond-like porous metallic biomaterials while maintaining unvaried porosity. Experimental results showed that the elastic modulus and yield strength of DCD structures were significantly lower than those of UD lattices, which could match the mechanical properties with the host bone and avoid stress shielding. The study demonstrated that the double-cone topology strategy has great potential in the field of orthopedic implants.

Summary: This paper proposes a two-scale concurrent topology optimization method for structures composed of multiple lattice materials, optimizing the microstructures, topology, and material distribution concurrently while ensuring connections between different lattice materials. The method defines a multi-domain self-connected material interpolation model to describe macro-scale topology and interfaces between lattice materials accurately. By using the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization interpolation and homogenization method, the proposed method effectively designs structures with superior mechanical properties.

Design, mechanical properties and energy absorption capability of graded-thickness triply periodic minimal surface structures fabricated by selective laser melting

Xiaojie Fan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method for designing graded-thickness TPMS structures and summarizes and compares the manufacturability, mechanical properties, and energy absorption capacities of Ti6Al4V graded samples with different thicknesses and TPMS types. The results reveal that constant-thickness TPMS samples exhibit good stiffness, strength, and energy absorption capacities, while graded-thickness samples avoid large stress fluctuations and show higher elastic moduli and cumulative energy absorption values than constant-thickness samples. Additionally, the local curvature distribution predicts the deformation behavior of TPMS structures.
