Onset of detwinning in Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy: A synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction study

N. B. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the onset of detwinning in magnesium alloy Mg-3Al-1Zn under continuous loading using real-time in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The results reveal that detwinning of the {10 (1) over bar2} extension twins occurs immediately upon unloading, regardless of whether the twins are activated by tension parallel to or compression perpendicular to the c-axis fibers.

In-situ synchrotron diffraction study of the localized phase transformation and deformation behavior in NiTi SMA

Pengyue Gao et al.

Summary: The accumulation of dislocation defect is recognized as the cause of residual strain and pseudoelastic instability in NiTi shape memory alloys. Experimental results show that Luders-type mechanism leads to a sharp increase in stress-induced martensite at the expense of austenite. On the other hand, uniform martensitic transformation occurs through homogeneous nucleation and growth of martensite in a local region with accumulation of dislocation defect.

Orientation-dependent plastic deformation mechanisms and competition with stress-induced phase transformation in microscale NiTi

Won Seok Choi et al.

Summary: Understanding the orientation-dependent deformation behavior of NiTi shape-memory alloys at small length scales is crucial for designing nano- and micro-electromechanical systems. The study reveals that plastic deformation modes include slip and deformation twinning, with the martensitic transformation depending on crystal orientation. Results suggest that operative martensitic transformation mode may be size-dependent.

Multiscale measurements with adjustable x-ray spot size for in situ imaging and diffraction

Summary: This paper introduces a multiscale measurement system developed to accommodate different size requirements for synchrotron x-ray imaging and x-ray diffraction, allowing for full azimuthal range diffraction measurements and large field of view strain field measurements. Proof-of-principle experiments on a magnesium alloy demonstrate the feasibility of the system.

Deformation dynamics and pre-compression effects on Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy: An in situ synchrotron-based multiscale study

N. B. Zhang et al.

Summary: In situ synchrotron diffraction was used to study the deformation dynamics of Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy during unloading and reverse loading at different pre-compression strains. The research found that detwinning occurs immediately after unloading, with more grains involved in detwinning as stress increases. Additionally, high pre-compression strains can enhance twin boundary-dislocation interaction, affecting the detwinning rate.
