A potential method for sex estimation of human skeletons using deep learning and three-dimensional surface scanning

Yongjie Cao et al.

Summary: The integration of deep learning algorithms and 3D surface scanning techniques for pelvic sex estimation has shown great potential in achieving accurate and rapid results, outperforming human experts in forensic anthropology. This study demonstrates the superior classification capacities of deep learning models for sex estimation in skeletal remains.

Sex estimation from the greater sciatic notch: a comparison of classical statistical models and machine learning algorithms

Siam Knecht et al.

Summary: This study developed statistical models for sex estimation based on visual and metric analyses of the greater sciatic notch (GSN) and additional variables linked to the GSN. The models showed overall accuracy ranging from 0.92 to 0.97, with penalized logistic regression (PLR) standing out after parameter optimization. Additionally, the inclusion of additional variables starting from the deepest point of the GSN improved accuracy.

Testing the validity of population-specific sex estimation equations: An evaluation based on talus and patella measurements

Lara Indra et al.

Summary: Sex estimation is crucial for forensic scientists in identifying human skeletal remains, with osteometric analyses proving useful but population-specific. Multivariable equations are preferred over single measurements, and the utility of talus and patella in sex estimation is limited, with discernible differences in accuracy among different measurements. Discriminant functions developed in Greek or Spanish populations can potentially be applied to Swiss populations.

Accuracies of discriminant function equations for sex estimation using long bones of upper extremities

Mubarak A. Bidmos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of population-specific discriminant function equations derived from measurements of the long bones of South African population groups. The results showed that generalised equations from pooled data of South Africans are accurate for sex estimation, but specific equations should not be applied to other population groups.
