Detonation propagation limits in hydrogen-oxygen mixtures in a tube filled with repeated perforated plates

Lu-Qing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the propagation behaviors of quasi-detonations in a round tube filled with repeated perforated plates. The results showed that the ratio of the overall jet diameter to the detonation cell size is crucial for the occurrence of Chapman-Jouguet detonations. The combustion regimes are affected by the ratio of hole spacing to hole diameter.

Effects of obstacle layout and blockage ratio on flame acceleration and DDT in hydrogen-air mixture in a channel with an array of obstacles

Min Li et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate flame acceleration and deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in hydrogen-air mixture with various obstacle layouts and blockage ratios. The results demonstrate that both obstacle layout and blockage ratio play significant roles in flame acceleration and DDT occurrence. The study provides insights into the effects of different layouts and blockage ratios on flame propagation and detonation initiation.

Effect of obstacles on the detonation diffraction and subsequent re-initiation

Xingyu Shi et al.

Summary: The DCRFoam solver on the OpenFOAM platform is used to simulate the reflection and diffraction processes of detonation waves colliding with different objects. The study finds that the re-initiation distance of detonation waves increases with the increase of cylindrical obstacle diameter, and the suppression effects of inverted triangle and square obstacles on detonation waves are more evident.

Numerical research on two-phase kerosene/air rotating detonation engines

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the propagation and propulsive performance of a three-dimensional gas-liquid two-phase kerosene/air rotating detonation engine. The effects of injection total temperature and droplet radius are discussed, and it is found that increasing the injection total temperature promotes the rotating detonation while increasing the droplet radius decreases the overall detonation velocity and fuel-based specific impulse. The study highlights the importance of maintaining stability in rotating detonation engines, as higher injection total temperature can damage their self-pressurization ability.

Effects of Divergence Inlet on Kerosene/Air Rotating Detonation Engines

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: An improved three-dimensional conservation element and solution element method with chemical source terms is developed and applied to investigate the effects of different divergence inlet patterns on vapor kerosene/air rotating detonation engines. The simulation results show that the divergence section decreases the disturbance from the downstream flow and affects the detonation front. The slot inlet width has a significant impact on the performance of the rotating detonation engine.

Effect of solid obstacle distribution on flame acceleration and DDT in obstructed channels filled with hydrogen-air mixture

Jiabao Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores the effect of solid obstacle distribution on the deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) in a homogeneous hydrogen-air mixture. The results show that there are two types of detonation initiation processes, and the flame acceleration experiences two periodic acceleration-deceleration processes. The symmetric distribution of obstacles leads to the shortest initiation distance and time. Furthermore, a higher unilateral blockage ratio results in more unfavorable DDT.

Problems of Detonation Wave Suppression in Hydrogen-Air Mixtures by Clouds of Inert Particles in One- and Two-dimensional Formulation

D. A. Tropin et al.

Summary: The study proposed physical and mathematical models describing detonation processes in hydrogen-air mixture, based on detailed and reduced kinetics models in one- and two-dimensional formulation. It calculated the interaction of detonation waves with inert particles and revealed types of detonation flows in gas suspension, obtaining volume concentrations and particle diameters causing detonation wave failure. Comparison between one-dimensional and two-dimensional approaches showed quantitative similarity in detonation wave velocity and values causing detonation failure.

Numerical investigation of the mechanism behind the deflagration to detonation transition in homogeneous and inhomogeneous mixtures of H2-air in an obstructed channel

Mohammad Hosein Shamsadin Saeid et al.

Summary: This numerical study investigates the effect of obstacle spacing and mixture concentration on the deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in hydrogen-air mixtures, revealing that DDT only occurs in inhomogeneous mixtures in a lean condition. Three different regimes of DDT were observed in near-stoichiometric inhomogeneous mixtures depending on obstacle spacing.

Physical and mathematical modeling of interaction of detonation waves with inert gas plugs

Dmitry Tropin et al.

Summary: The paper proposed a physical and mathematical model for describing the processes of detonation transition, attenuation, and suppression in hydrogen-air mixture using one- and two-dimensional formulations, considering kinetic of chemical transformations in reactive gases with inert gas plugs. The study showed different flow regimes after shock wave exits from inert gas plug depending on isolating gas type and plug length, including reinitiation of detonation wave, suppression with formation of deflagration wave, and suppression with combustion zone isolation. The effectiveness of detonation suppression by various inert gas plugs was compared, with carbon dioxide being the most efficient for suppressing the detonation wave.

Summary: This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the initiation of oblique detonation modes by a high velocity projectile in an argon-diluted hydrogen-oxygen mixture. The simulation showed agreement between calculated and experimental flow patterns, with the calculated detonation cell size also matching experimental data.
